Seriously who gives a shit about the "highest grossing movie" records anymore? It's a completely worthless statistic.

Ticket prices get substantially higher every year. Of course movies are going to gross more if it costs more

I sense you're waiting for aXXo to hook you up

No, that was District 9.

Seriously, I have no interest in this film. Maybe it is the nausea inducing quantity of commercials, or it could just be that I despise CGI-porn (see Star Wars - Episode One). Either way, the commercials haven't convinced me that the plot would interest me.

Absolutely not. I resist the tug of the sheeple mob mentality, especially when it comes to supporting a crummy, overhyped CG-fest. I probably won't even watch it on DVD now because of the nausea inducing love-fest this movie is receiving. Nice try though. "Prophecy"...ha!

Sheeple like you are the worst kind of sheeple: the kind that thinks they're not a sheeple.

Enjoy caring too much about what people think about you. :awe:

Wow. Revisionist fanboi much? Yeah, because every commercial break, we aren't spammed by Avatar ads, by McDonald's EAT A BIG MAC GO SEE AVATAR NOW! ads, etc. During any given hour of TV, you are guaranteed to see: a regular Avatar ad, an Avatar video game ad, and an Avatar/McDonald's ad.

you have never seen the movie therefore your opinion of the movie is completely worthless.

It's hard, but Avatar relies HEAVILY on overseas. It really depends how Avatar picks up as a domestic. It's not looking like a sprinter like TDK, and has the characteristics of Titanic. If you're optimistic, you could say week 5 it'll have MLK holiday to boost it, and then it'll have the Feb Oscars boost kinda like Titanic did, but to go 18 weeks without theaters dropping will be TOUGH. Titanic ran 18 weeks with theater counts increasing. Avatar was a huge release, and they're cutting theaters for this weekend already.

BTW, I should say it's most likely Avatar runs between a 30-35% dropoff given previous blockbusters' trends.

titanic was really strange in the way it earned its money. there simply weren't any big movies that came out after it for a couple months and it sat at number 1 for a long time. didn't make a ton of money each week but it just kept going, getting an additional ~$25 million a week.

do you think avatar is going to get a big oscar boost?

I personally don't think it's gonna get that big of a oscar boost... but it's going to help... unless it wins an impressive 10 or whatever awards Titanic won. It all depends though.

TDK had a short run, and it was way too short. Something tells me Avatar's getting a better and longer run. It might not be Titanic-long (because DVDs come out sooner and sooner), but it will be much better compared to the recent hits.

What's coming out next that's big enough that will clear Avatar out? Nothing in the next month I don't think. But even then Avatar's going to lose some theaters. It came out as a big release unlike Titanic.

Also, maybe cuz I was a kid back then but Titanic didn't hit big at all. I don't think many people even cared for it. I saw it like a month after it came out, and even then the popularity was barely starting. I think it completely hit home well into 1998 like January-ish time time frame. Avatar's popularity built rather fast, but I think the most success comes out when a few fans enjoy the experience and then continue bringing more people in. That's how Titanic succeeded.

Oh, and finally, let's not forget the effect of the 3D movie here. It's done remarkably well and will inflate the box office #s a lot. At Box Office Mojo it's funny because you see TDK fanboys going off about how Avatar will never sell as many tickets even though it's projected to blow past TDK in domestic #s soon.

Edit: I project Avatar will finish above $420 million by this weekend, sitting just shy of Star Wars Ep 1 in domestic #s. #7 all time/

I don't give a rats ass one way or another. By the way all these basement dwellers are defending this movie I am starting to think this is some nerdy ass movie. I haven't even seen a preview.

That's the problem, lot of people are bashing it and did not even see it. At least watch it so you can form a valid opinion based on something.

To me it's a movie like any other, it was above average I'd say but I'm not about to become a fanboy either. TBH I did not even know about it until I heard all the hype so decided to see what it was about.

Still not sure if I'll go see it. If I do, it will be strictly for the special effects and I've never done that. The plot and the aliens's look rub me the wrong way.

It was crazy. We went to see A Single Man the other night and noticed the next 4 showings of Avatar was sold out during that time even though this movie has been out for weeks now. Very weird, I don't get it. :hmm:

James Cameron weaves stories that envelope you in his world. Terminator, Terminator 2, The Abyss, Aliens, True Lies even.. all of them make you care about the characters and what happens to them. You become a part of their lives in the world they live in.

Titanic and Avatar are his crown achievements in this regard. People weep for what happens to Jack and Kate as well as Sully and Neytiri. People may dismiss the films as pop culture banality, but they are actually some of the finest amalgamations of emotion infused into film. He drags you kicking and screaming into a fantasy world and makes you care about 8 ft. aliens and their planet.

Anyways, haters gonna hate. :awe:

You're kidding right? I didn't even know who James Cameron was till you posted this. This is the guy that everyone is kissing his ass? The only good movie on that list is Titanic. Dude is not Quentin Tarantino or Spielberg.

It's popular because they marketed it as THE MOST POPULAR MOST EXPENSIVE MOVIE EVER MADE. THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ANY IN HISTORY for months before anyone even knew what the film was about. Like so much in Hollywood it became a self fulfilling prophecy.

Ya, that worked great for waterworld. Everyone who bought the hype saw Avatar in the first 7 days. Only word of mouth can generate what Avatar is accomplishing now, and what Titanic did then.

I knew kids like you back in high school who would stop listening to a particular band if they got popular because they "sold out", never mind if the band was actually good. You fancy yourself independent minded and god forbid you like something the "sheeple" like. New people continue to see Avatar because those who see it tell their friends that it's a cinematic experience that really should be seen in theaters. Now you proudly claim you'll deprive yourself of seeing the movie on DVD (where it will only be 1/10 as effective as on a big screen) because even more people are talking about how much they liked the movie? Your self-spiting nose biting is rather ridiculous.

I didn't even know who James Cameron was till you posted this.

If true, this merely tells us that your pop culture knowledge/interest is essentially nil and as such your opinion on such matters, matters little.

The main reason I disliked the movie was because of the one-dimensional, flat characters that I did not give one shit about. I did not care about any of it. The reason they were there was pointless. The reason they decided they had to blow them up was nonexistant. The fact they did try to blow them up meant nothing to me. Every single character in that film could have died or lived and it would not have changed a thing because there is nothing to hold onto.

Nice try though.

United 93 - 8.5/10 - I didn't see it so I can't say much about it but my father who has very similar tastes to me just saw it and loved it. So these are his reactions. Tension grinding at it's best despite knowing the outcome. Apparently extremely skillfully shot and edited. Collectively the passengers are the protagonist here, there is no central character obviously, but all the parts (played by unknowns thankfully) are very convincing.
