It's hard, but Avatar relies HEAVILY on overseas. It really depends how Avatar picks up as a domestic. It's not looking like a sprinter like TDK, and has the characteristics of Titanic. If you're optimistic, you could say week 5 it'll have MLK holiday to boost it, and then it'll have the Feb Oscars boost kinda like Titanic did, but to go 18 weeks without theaters dropping will be TOUGH. Titanic ran 18 weeks with theater counts increasing. Avatar was a huge release, and they're cutting theaters for this weekend already.

BTW, I should say it's most likely Avatar runs between a 30-35% dropoff given previous blockbusters' trends.

Because. It didn't have the hype of all the other movies (e.g. TDK, ROTK, Star Wars). Instead, it's a lot like Titanic. Cameron had the same idea. People go see it (the true fans), and then come back and bring more people in. That's why Avatar is so weird. People keep tweeting and FBing about it because people thought this movie was a WTF and a bust. It's working though. Just looking @ the numbers I have to say it's a huge hit. It's not the same kind of hit TDK was or any other big blockbuster like Spiderman, etc.

The key is that PEOPLE are interested in Avatar, ie, men & women, just like Titanic. With the other movies you mentioned, the ratio of women who wanted to see them was pretty low in my neck of the woods. Most that I know who went to the other films, did so to placate their significant other. That wasn't the case with Avatar though. They wanted to see it because it looked cool, and different.

It's popular because they marketed it as THE MOST POPULAR MOST EXPENSIVE MOVIE EVER MADE. THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ANY IN HISTORY for months before anyone even knew what the film was about. Like so much in Hollywood it became a self fulfilling prophecy.

Wow. Revisionist fanboi much? Yeah, because every commercial break, we aren't spammed by Avatar ads, by McDonald's EAT A BIG MAC GO SEE AVATAR NOW! ads, etc. During any given hour of TV, you are guaranteed to see: a regular Avatar ad, an Avatar video game ad, and an Avatar/McDonald's ad.

He's the other side of the coin: The i won't do it because it's popular crowd.

These type of people like to think they are independent thinkers but are really sheep of a different color. Actually going to see the movie and intelligently evaluating it on it's merits/flaws is too out of the box.
