How is that possible? If you consider the entire country, that's a huge population where there's a significant uneducated majority. The average IQ should be much lower with this under conderation... especially if Hong Kong has been separated into a category of its own. If this is however based on a certain younger age group, then I guess it's possible.

IQ has nothing to do with education.

Are you good at maths?

Most IQ tests are horribly maths orientated.

Yeah, I'm a bad grammar nazi too (and it kills me that you quoted it before I could edit out my error ).

It has little bearing in the real world if you're not good with people though. I see IQ as only one aspect of intelligence. I think there are also physical (athletic), interpersonal and emotional facets of it, as well as possibly spiritual.

I'd like to see a link, but I'm guessing this was in no way a standard test like the Stanford-Binet or similar.

No shens. I can tell you first hand that koreans are the smartest people on the planet. Hong Kong doesn't count because it's not a "people" or country, that's just where all the smart chinese people live.

If IQ mostly depend on genes why did Germans have an average IQ score of 76 in 1954 and are now scoring 102?

Maybe their being illiterate and poor is a result of the average low intelligence of that country. I would think if you had a country that was comprised of below-intelligence people it wouldn't be as prosperous as a country comprised of people with a high intelligence.

Also, if you wanted to cross check the results, you could test the IQ of immigrants and see how they compare to the people in the country they came from.

It doesn't surprise me that people in sub-saharan Africa score lowest. People of sub-saharan African descent generally score low even when they're living in prosperous nations like the US.

I think these scores merely illustrate a possibility that people in this politically correct culture aren't willing to accept, and that's that IQ might correlate with race.

Correlated with race.....

You are a f'ing tard.

The personal attack was uncalled for.

You see that, you got too emotional talking about an issue which should be approached logically.

You instantly discounted a possibility due to political correctness and emotion before you even analyzed or considered it. That is not a trait of a logical mind.

A good percentage of people in Asia are malnourished, yet they don't score poorly on IQ tests. They often score higher than those living in countries where people are taller and better fed.

Also notice that countries that are populated mainly by Africans but are nowhere near Africa (such as Jamaica and Barbados) score very closely to African countries. In the case of Barbados, they have a relatively high standard of living, yet still a relatively low average IQ.

Want to talk about science? How about the fact that you obviously don't understand the concept of correlation versus causation.....

When you figure it out, come back and discuss the topic at hand.

There should be a pretty strong correlation between education and intelligence.

Not 100% of course, but still there. You can't be intelligent about a subject unless the knowledge is there in the first place...

Where is this list from and who made it and by what methods. It seems like such a rediculous list. I don't know how entire countries have populations whose average citizen could be deemed mentally retarded. Most IQ testing methods are controversial to begin with, and the data collection methods of this survey are probably laughable.

Most IQ test are about what someone has learned through formal education. I know many people that could ace a math test, but couldn't change oil in a car with the instruction manual.

Of course there's a correlation, because more intelligent people that have the capacity for greater cognitive ability will perform better in school.

Many of the countries on the bottom of the list have poor academic standards and many don't even get an opportunity for a complete education. In this respect, being uneducated is a reflection of their social standing more than anything about their intelligence.

And being intelligent about a subject doesn't make sense. You can get smart about a subject because you're intelligent, but IQ test is supposed to measure cognitive ability. That's it. This is what gives them the capacity for acquiring the knowledge.

Any IQ test that focuses on knowledge isn't an IQ test.

He never said a word about causation. Brain science isn't sufficiently advanced that we can know the exact genetic causes (if any) of intelligence, or lack thereof. He is correct that you are letting emotion and political correctness cloud your outlook and he is correct that that is a sign of an unscientific and uncritical mind.

Arguing about the effect of genetics and nature vs nurture is like arguing about religion. Many people already have their minds made up (about a subject that they don't know about) and they aren't willing to accept some of the possibilities.

Personally, my mind isn't made up but it's leaning to the nature side. However I am open to any realistic ideas.

The problem is that we live in a world with an increasing political correctness trend and some people are gaining a distorted view of reality in order to accommodate these politically correct beliefs. Some people simply are not open to certain possibilities. They don't want to believe that reality could be so cold and/or cruel. They want to believe that reality works the way they want it to work, and not the other way around. They are simply not open to the idea that different races of people have different optimizations or abilities.

I did not start this thread or publish the results that the OP posted, but I am open to believe in reality, whatever the truth determines that to be. Again, I am not pushing for people to believe in any particular opinion. I'm just saying that people need to approach scientific questions like this logically and not emotionally.

I recall a (controversial ) article by some smart guy with the same point you have, read it a couple years ago. Probably linked from ATOT, even

I agree with your statement about people having their mind made up, but the story of the Polgar sisters might be of interest to you. Essentially, their father "created" the "genius" that many versed in chess acknowledge.

Equally so, you can look to the history of Mozart and his experience with his father Leopold. I'm sure there are similar stories with other acknowledged geniuses with an IQ that follows with it. Newton was a tireless worker with an obsession that would likely leave him on medication on today's society.

You responded by saying that you could be smart even if you don't know the subject.

That makes no sense - how are you supposed to be good at mathematical transformations if you don't know what math is? Obviously you need a background in a subject / what is being measured in order to score well.
The IQ system is measured by western societies' standards where things such as intelligence in leadership / quickness of mind in fighting is not considered.

not with a crappy IQ test where they have you compare some phd level english word to another one.

what does being politically correct / having a distorted view on reality have ANYTHING to do with what you quoted?

I think both you and Eli are misunderstanding the point behind an IQ test. Can we please stop thinking that intelligence == smart? 911 clearly stated that you can be intelligent and yet not know how to read; that's not saying you can be smart about a subject and have no knowledge of it.

Let's summarize:

Cognitive ability (measured by IQ) -> intelligence -> knowledge -> smart.

I think too many people have taken the online IQ tests where you're asked questions like, "Make the only possible anagram out of the word banalities."

on the other hand twin studies show that environment/family doesnt have that much of an effect. a large component is genetics. the sisters is an example of one family who may have had the genetic foundation for being good at chess to begin with, its too small a sample to mean anything, let alone extrapolate from.

QFT. Some of the smartest people I know are also the dumbest. A family friend is an amazing mathematician, a philosopher, and a computer programmer. But he can't put together a PC - he can hardly use a screwdriver.

But some people just lack common sense. A good friend of mine (who is going to BU and studying to be a doctor - very intelligent when it comes to math/science) just has no clue sometimes. He went to a frat party and a hot chick came onto him but he ran away because he was afraid of STD's and thought it would be "creepy" to bring a condom.
