Average life of a DVD Burner

What is the lifespan of a DVD Burner-in hours or average time (months years etc), links would be preferable. I appreciate it folks!

Probably around a CD Burner...

My friend still has an old Plextor that is fine...

And my 2x Acer (obviously not of the highest quality out there) died after 2.5 years of constant usage (And even for a few months it was the CDROM drive b/c my CDRom drive broke and I never bothered to fix it) but when it did (i would keep getting errors at random points during a burn...) I just bought a 12X Sony CDRW for 59.99 (and needless to say I was very excited @ that speed! Hahaha now I complain when discs take more than 3 minutes to burn)

Either way if you are thinking about getting a DVD burner- just do it. By the time it breaks you'll probably have replaced it with something else

If you are talking about how much wear and tear a drive can take before it will die, it's really hard to say because they haven't been out long enough for an actual time of death to be know. I would say you can expect them to last just as long as many CD-Roms do since they are pretty similiar and probely suffer from the same problems a CD-ROM would have. Most manufactures have an estimated use time which you should be able to find with some research.

I wouldn't worry about the life of a burner, because it will likely work through whatever new technology will be coming out.

My first HP CD burner for like $200 was a 4x and it lasted about a year. If you are going to buy a DVD burner, I reccomend spending a few extra bucks, even if it may be as much as $30 or $40, and buying a brand name one like Plextor from newegg.com than any Generic $150 burner from a local store. Plextor is known for its high end and high quality parts they use which gives it the difference and quality worth the extra money.
