I was trying so hard to delay buying an X2 till they got cheaper, but i have managed to justify purchasing one sometime in the next 30ish days.
Bad influencing from teh forums

Yeah, I just bought an AMD X2 3800 +. I almost bougth a Dell Pentium D 830 because as a total package it was cheaper.

However, if you consider the fact that AMD X2 runs a lot cooler and the fact that a 20% OC makes a hell of a difference in the performance of the CPU, the fight is over.

I previously used (3 days ago) a Northwood 2.6 Ghz and OCed to 3.1 Ghz but although it's 20% OC as well, clock speed doesn't mean a lot for Intel.

Considering it is so easy and stable to OC an AMD X2 3800+ to almost an AMD X2 4600+ equivalent, the chip looks like a very good deal.

Processor AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core
Model 3800+
Ordering P/N (Tray) ADA3800DKA5BV
Ordering P/N (PIB) ADA3800BVBOX
Stepping E4 - Manchester

Detailed info from The BalusC Server:

X2 3800+ Toledo
OEM: ADA3800DAA5CD
BOXED: ADA3800CDBOX

X2 3800+ Manchester
OEM: ADA3800DAA5BV
BOXED: ADA3800BVBOX

This is so bizzare.

The X2's we bought from our distributor were this:

Retail Part Number (BOXED): ADA3800BVBOX
OEM Part Number (On the chip itself): ADA3800DAA5CD

This is a crazy contradiction. What's wierd is our boxes came sealed direct from AMD; our distributor basically just tossed a shipping label on and sent them over.

So, one of two things is true:

1.) Those model numbers aren't necessarly true (i.e. CD can be manchester, etc)
2.) CPU-Z is not correctly reporting the stepping/core of the X2's

I wonder which it is...

So one or the other...

That's true, as long as they run nice and OC well, who cares

I can't believe how well people are able to OC these 3800's. It's awesome. Kind of makes me wish I would have held one for myself!

My guess is CPU-Z not reporting correctly.

I guess it's possible that AMD got some mixed up, but it seems less likely, especially since the stepping bjc112 said he got is a Toledo one.
Not only that, but a quick google shows that that stepping to the same as the 4400+.
Pretty much confirms my suspicion that the E6 X2 3800+ are cache-failed 4400+

Well I don't KNOW if it is.. I was under the impression CD was a toledeo core, but doesn't seem that way..

Either way, good chip!

Are you using the latest CPU-Z 1.30?

I'm almost certain you do have an E6 (Toledo)
AMD may have changed something in them that causes them to report incorrectly, since i don't believe steppings can lie.

Ya that was my mistake, but either way, you said you were shipping CD steppings and you did.. So anything else didnt matter!

Looks like its going to take upwards of 1.54v to get 2.7ghz going...

Not worth the extra volts for 100mhz..

I'm happy with 2.6ghz x 2

Whats everyone doing to stress there X2's?

H.264 1080p would do a good job, but apple pulled all the 1080p trailers and replaced them with 720!!

WMV HD isn't stressing enough!

What can I use!?!

TMPGenc will stress 100% cpu usage....

dual primes....
dual superpi's....

Dual instances of F@H for 1 week with no EEU's....

bjc112 I just ran the SuperPi 32M test and it was running about 12% slower at each increment than your system and a lot of disk thrashing. I also ran SuperPi 8M with the SSE3 patch and this took about 6 1/2mins well below what I was expecting.

I've never used these progs before is there something I should be doing to get better results?

SuperPI loves bandwidth.. Tighter timings will shave of some time..

My timings are @ 2.5 / 3 / 3 / 8 and still running 2t until I nail down the correct mem settings for this BIOS.

I am also running 200mhz slower than my Venice that score 26min! (2/2/2/5/1T)

I'm running stable at 2.4 Ghz but I haven't been able to go any higher. At 2.5 with a bump in voltage I was able to get Windows to load but it crashed shortly after. Normally it restarts at the loading screen.

My system:
Antec Truepower 500w
X2 3800+
Epox 9NPA+Ultra (flashed to latest bios)
2 Gigs OCZ Value

I've done the following:
Ram @ 2-3-3-7
HT @ 3
FSB: 240
Ratio: 10X
CPU V: +0.025v (Bounces around 1.45-1.49v)
Mem Freq.: DDR333(166mhz)

Any recommendations?

Downloaded the X2 driver, update BIOS.. REmoved Venice chip and popped in the X2.

ZERO issues.

What HSF ? What temps ? what voltage for the core ? what memory timings and dividers ?

i really want 2700 @ 1.44 idle @ 1.47-1.48 loaded..

XP-90C w/ 92mm panaflo and AS5.

Temp sits around 32C. 45C under load.

Voltage is 1.45

Memory is currently at 2,3,3,7 2t using the DDR333(166mhz) divider.

bjc112 I ran the SuperPi 32M again at your settings of 263x10 with the your memory settings
2.5,3,3,8 2T and I got the initial value of about 33secs!

Could you give me a few more details about the settings you are running?

BIOS?
Aggressive Timing ON/Disable?
HTT?

Also if you have a chance could you do the SuperPi 16K, 32K etc. up to say 2M - This would he me rule out the IO speed differences of our HDD.

Many thanks
