Sadly, he wouldn't let me build one for him. I did the best I could with Dell coupons. I found a Dell Dimension with 3ghzx2 Pentium D, 2gb DDR2, 256mb X600SE, DVDRW, 19in digital flatscreen, Windows media center 2005, 30w speakers, wireless kb and mouse for $930 shipped. Not too bad.
Why all that for a non-gaming PC? You could probably find something that meets his needs perfectly with Dell coupons for <$500.

Basically, I'm saying that you made the same type of mistake that he did.

Of course I don't know the exact details, maybe 2 GB of memory is needed. 99.99% of people buying Best Buy computers won't use a DVDRW either. But maybe he does need it.

Heh, good point. I got a PC for $270 that would be perfectly suitable for most people for at least two years.

Why do you care?

I am happy that people overpay for stuff like computers and cars. It subsidizes Hot Deals for ferengis like me

(That's why I hate one-price auto dealerships. I love to haggle.)

Yeah, not true. Us computer geeks watch a lot of pr0n, so we know where the parts are. We just don't get to USE them all that often

Alright, start a poll asking "What is "g spot?"". With the answers being "nVidia website", "rapper", "car performance tool", "something in a woman's head", and "The spot your GF wants you to hit". And see how many people get the right answer.

i'd imagine most will know what it is

but how many of them know where it is?

I'd rather my relatives spent more and bought a computer from the store instead of me building it. Then I don't have to be "first line 24/7 technical support" for their computer.

Give people more credit than that.

If you do, you're unfortunately mistaken.
Average, means average. If you're middle-middle class or above, it's likely you're significantly less ignorant than most people. Not because they're necessarily unintelligent, but because they have never been properly educated. Some rise above the limitation most do not.

Still SOP in Illinois <-- the article is old but nothing has changed.

America takes good care of its citizens and guarantees education for all, but the system needs help. It's not firing on all cylinders, and the outcome is people who have no idea how a simple engine works, for example, and don't have the tools to discover it.

Thank your lucky stars you aren't one of them, and particularly your parents for providing you with so much that so many don't have.

That article is extremely depressing
What's even sadder is when you think about how dumb the average person is, and then you realize half the population is even dumber than the average person.

I had the same case with my other brother a few weeks ago. He was so set on this $2100 Sony laptop at bestbuy which came with a Nvidia 7600 or something. I hooked him with this absolutely sick Inspiron E1705 with a 7900GS and 1080p display for $1300.
Just because Dell is cheap doesn't mean its the sh!t. Better than retail for the most part sure, but if you just peddle Dell for their coupons you aren't being a good computer guru

Not necessarily but doing some research before you jump into things is a good start. If I?m going to buy a new car first I?m going to get online and read reviews, compare prices, etc. It?s not what we know it?s the ability to find out anything we want to know that makes us above the rest.

I'll remember this the next time some computer geek on this forum asks me which tax software is the best.

Then that would probably fall under the highlighted text.

Most don't do that. And asking me doesn't make them average. or make me above average. Not everyone has time to research, and sometimes they rely on a salesman to have the answers for them. And for some people, it's a matter of time/cost benefit. Maybe the brother didn't care that the price was that high.

Belgium is easy to find, just follow the German tank tracks.

Oh, and spark plugs plug sparks, duh. They are used to keep the current from pouring out of wall sockets when nothing is plugged in.

QFT. Really, if they're happy with their Sempron or whatever, it does what they want it to, and there's tech support to help them when they need it, who cares if they pay too much?

The minute YOU get involved, you'll be held responsible for everything wrong with it for as long as they own it. When people ask me I tell 'em to go to Dell and pick out one they like, with the best tech support package they can afford. They're usually happy, and that's the last I hear about it.

Same with my sister-in-law. BestBuy must love her because last year she plunked down $1499+tax for a mediocre Sony laptop and paid the full $1199 price for a Canon digital Rebel this year.

Dell?s marketing is so ubiquitous that I thought that everyone knew that you can buy a PC for loose change these days. Is your brother blind by chance?
Or, is the difference that your brother actually has a life. What would you rather, a cheap PC or a life? On second thoughts don?t answer.

2GB RAM for a casual user; get real. That?s like buying your gran a car with a turbo. Nice if YOU wanna borrow it a lot, but no use to her.

actually, i disagree with that. the average geek probably knows every inch of the female body from looking at so much porn. its getting to actually be able touch a female body thats the problem.

Average 16 year olds care *WAY* too much about the mundane details of other poeple's lives, such as what brand of applaince they purchase at what price.

I like how Best Buy clerks ALWAYS ask you what magazine you want because you get a free subscription, without asking you if you wanted it in the first place.

I take it that he has a job and is making decent money? If so then he probably really doesn't care about having the absolute best computer for the best price. That sort of stuff is up to bored nerds like yourself.

On a side note: Don't go the route of building a PC for people. It costs too much time and money and then you are stuck with the expected tech support.
