I too vouch for this laptop. I have the Sotec 3120X version which comes with a DVD/CDRW combo drive. If I can describe this sucker in one word, it would be "unbelievable." The value/feature ratio is incredible. This laptop is not an ultra portable, but it is a lightweight portable laptop that can function without an external cd-rom. My roommate has one of those really slim sony vaio's, and my Sotec wipes the floor with it. I have almost as much portability as his sub-4lb laptop with a whole lot of more features. Plus, my mobile celeron feels just as fast as his laptop. Keep in mind that most laptops need to upgrade their hard drives to 5400rpm ones to feel any real difference in speeds because that's where the bottleneck is. I am definitely going to upgrade mine, since I don't even think this celeron is being maxed at all. For all you would be laptop buyers, ask yourself some questions:
Do you want to actually carry your laptop around? And how often?
What do you want to do with your laptop? Games? Office Apps?
I had a couple of Compaq laptops before this Sotec, and let me tell you I hated them. I got in on the Compaq 1500T deal a few months back, and that beast was just gargantuan. I couldn't lug that thing around to save my life. I for one want a laptop that is actually portable and durable.
Also, the concerns over fan noise and keyboard placement are totally misplaced. Sotec has addressed all issues with fan noise in its earlier run of laptops through their warranty service. Search any Sotec user board, they will vouch for Sotec's customer service. And in fact, mine which I bought a two months back has had NO fan noise to date. Also, keyboard placement is not that big of a deal. You WILL get used to it, trust me. I've been typing my 60 page thesis on it and have found little to complain about.
This is by far one of the hottest deals on laptops to date, guaranteed. Keep in mind that Sotec is actually a well known Japanese laptop manufacturer. They aren't some house brand that's made of some shoddy parts from mexico. Trust me on this one, this suckers a winner.
