I too vouch for this laptop. I have the Sotec 3120X version which comes with a DVD/CDRW combo drive. If I can describe this sucker in one word, it would be "unbelievable." The value/feature ratio is incredible. This laptop is not an ultra portable, but it is a lightweight portable laptop that can function without an external cd-rom. My roommate has one of those really slim sony vaio's, and my Sotec wipes the floor with it. I have almost as much portability as his sub-4lb laptop with a whole lot of more features. Plus, my mobile celeron feels just as fast as his laptop. Keep in mind that most laptops need to upgrade their hard drives to 5400rpm ones to feel any real difference in speeds because that's where the bottleneck is. I am definitely going to upgrade mine, since I don't even think this celeron is being maxed at all. For all you would be laptop buyers, ask yourself some questions:

Do you want to actually carry your laptop around? And how often?

What do you want to do with your laptop? Games? Office Apps?

I had a couple of Compaq laptops before this Sotec, and let me tell you I hated them. I got in on the Compaq 1500T deal a few months back, and that beast was just gargantuan. I couldn't lug that thing around to save my life. I for one want a laptop that is actually portable and durable.

Also, the concerns over fan noise and keyboard placement are totally misplaced. Sotec has addressed all issues with fan noise in its earlier run of laptops through their warranty service. Search any Sotec user board, they will vouch for Sotec's customer service. And in fact, mine which I bought a two months back has had NO fan noise to date. Also, keyboard placement is not that big of a deal. You WILL get used to it, trust me. I've been typing my 60 page thesis on it and have found little to complain about.

This is by far one of the hottest deals on laptops to date, guaranteed. Keep in mind that Sotec is actually a well known Japanese laptop manufacturer. They aren't some house brand that's made of some shoddy parts from mexico. Trust me on this one, this suckers a winner.

I almost jump gun on this one,
The price is so low, I can't think a better way to upgrade my old p2 366 laptop.
but I really like the DVD/CD-RW, cause I use alot of large data files on trip. where can I buy the DVD/CD-rw for this baby?
btw, I just all Averatec, the 3150 is start to show up at price of $999.

Just picked one of these puppies up. I was impressed with the build quality, and I also have an IBM. No dead pixels either. $600 bucks. I'm happy.

For me, it was $850 out the door, with $250 in rebates coming in a month or three. The salesman at Best Buy said they expected them all to blow out last Sunday, but they didn't. The sale ends tomorrow.

After thinking about it a lot... I think I'm gonna go get one of these.
I've been contemplating getting a laptop for school. And I can't seem to find a better deal on one. Especially one that's so small.
Can any of you guys give me an idea on battery life?

Might as well make use of it... Do you guys know what kind of ram this takes?

To answer your questions:

Battery life- a shade over 3 hours

memory pc133 sodimm. It uses the sis 630/730 chipset. Anything that works with the sis chipset will work here.

Look all you want at the toshiba protege 2000. It is nice. But it also costs 2 grand +. You could buy four of these for that price.

I got one. It looks like it has 2 or 3 dead pixels. But I can only see them if I put my face almost touching the screen (So I'll probably just keep it). I also got the last one they had. Except for one that was open box. Did you guys buy the extended warranty BB offers? I just couldn't bring myself to spend $200 on a warranty for a $550 laptop.

Do you realize that all open box items @ BB this week only were 25% off retail prices? Makes it $599+ tax - $250 in rebates!!!

I don't think so. (I hope not anyway) And they didn't say anything about it.
The open box was $769 as opposed to $799 new. I figured I'd just go ahead and spend $30 more and get the new.

standard markdown is 10%

you are refering to clearance markdowns on open box HT stuff this week - you are unlikely to see much of a mark down especially on this one because BB is losing money on these laptops, about ~$0.50 actaully....

dew.

Is this deal still good today (may 3)?

Yes, if your store still has any.

I believe they do, when a rebate "Expires May 3" does that mean it it good until after may 3rd?

Edit: Actually the rebate form says "OFFER DATE: 04/27/2003 TO 05/03/2003" so looks good. Now the decision.....
