AVG Free to be discontinued??

When AVG was updating the virus patterns this morning, I got a prompt that AVG Free was going to be discontinued for me in Jan 2007.

Does this mean AVG will not be available free anymore, or is it some sort of restricted use of the free version for only one year (I think I installed mine in Jan 2006)?

New free version is out and they will no longer support the old version starting in 2007.

I am repairing an infected PC tonight with Symantec on it. The damn thing continued to pop up warnings about found trojans and whatnot, but it never successfully removed the root of the problem. It appears to be the Winfixer trojan, but after I uninstall Symantec I am undecided on whether to go with AVG or AOL Kapersky. I do think the AOL branded Kapersky has a better scanning engine, but I have yet to try it on any of my personal PCs, so 'testing' it on a client's PC is not what I had in mind. As TechHead mentioned, the AOL part of the name bugs me ... if the somewhat tech savvy guy gets the PC back and sees this AOL stuff on his PC, he may write me off as a no-talent hack for using such 'kiddie' software. Decisions, decisions ...

You'd be foolish not to consider it. It's the best free anti-virus available in my opinion.

I hate AOL just as much as the next guy over, but I'll trade seeing their logo in a corner on the rare occasion I look at the control panel for one of the best damn AV engines around.

Yep. It's just Kaspersky with AOL branding. It works great and it's completely uninstrusive, especially for a free AV. So far, I haven't seen ANY popups for updates or things like that.

Can either the AVG or AOL antivirus be set for 'on demand' only as I already have a realtime AV that I'd just like to supplement on occasion for extra scans?

Yes, just disable real-time protection. However if you load AOL/Kaspersky there is no reason use AVG or another antivirus with mediocre detection rates. Not to mention you will add several more running processes, potential software conflicts, and the possibility of false positives.

If you plan on scanning random files/downloads use Virustotal since it uses 20+ AV scanners. :thumbsup:

I already have the Virus Scanner Pro that came with my VCOM SystemSuite 7 Professional. It's based on Trend's.

OK. Uninstalled the AV component of SystemSuite and installed Active Virus Shield. Updated and ran a full scan. System turned out clear. I'm gonna use AVS realtime with high settings for a while.

Because I use high settings? I did not find documentation that explained the difference and uses except for the little blurb in help.
