AVI files: Sound, but no Video!?!

I just downloaded 2 of the upcoming episodes of Farscape and they're both in .AVI format. Fo whatever reason when I try and play them all get is sound. No video.

My question is: Is this because some idiot Kazaa user had a 500MB file of just the audio from the episode or is it a problem with Windows Media Player?

You will probably need to get a different Divx codec for the file to work properly. Do a search on Google and see what you can find.

Ca nyou give me a better idea of what i might be looiking for? I'm not well versed in the different DivX codecs. Am I going to be looking for plug-in's for WMP or some other app?

I had this problem with an AVI once and it turned out that it needed the nAVI codec, it may be the same for your avi.
Do a google search and you can probably find it.

i just had the same problem when trying to watch invader zim, to fix it, download divx 3.11 alpha then install divx 5.0. that should help.

Go to www.divx.com, and download the Divx 5.0 codec/player (the free version...that is all you need). This will install the codec on your system. Now, when you play the video with Windows Media Player (or the player included with the codec), everything should run properly. Codecs are not applications on their own, they are used by players to understand how to decode the (or encode) the video stream in the file. This way it is easy to make Windows Media player play quicktime movies, mpeg 1, and divx movies all in the same player without having to upgrade the player...you just need the codec. Just download the divx codec and give it a run. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone! I d/l-ed the DivX player and it plays beautifully. If it works well enough I'll proibably have it replace WMP.

dont use the playa for this, rather use mediaplayer6.4 go to start run and type in mplayer2

If I install the Divx codec, will that let IrfanView play my AVI files? I was able to play them 2 days ago, then yesterday and today I can't play them. I downloaded the new IrfanView 3.61 with the plugins and installed that and that's when it started. I uninstalled/reinstalled and reinstalled the plugins and still no joy. TIA.
