Yeah, that disc is so expensive, and I haven't ever seen a good price on it. I'm not a videophile, but I wouldn't mind spending up to $25 to make sure that the occasional DVD I watch is being shown correctly, but those prices on Avia or DVD essentials are ridiculous. But that price is the lowest I've ever seen for it.

I read somewhere that you can rent another DVD called Video Essentials from NetFlix.com. That is for those people that have Netflix.com accounts.

NeoSolo,

Good post, that IS a good deal. I had ordered it right before your post on FW. $ 32.46 shipped, no tax, is the best I have seen.

It's a shame I couldn't have "recommended" it to you to give you another 10% off! ( I saw your offer to do the same for others!)

Aparently the package contains a filter(s) that may not be present in a rented copy, so I feel it will be worthwhile to keep my own copy.

Great Post... If you have an HDTV and a medium to high end HomeTheater Audio setup... GET THIS DVD NOW. The video calibration test patterns and sound calibration/level setting sounds are priceless. The guys that put this DVD together are the diffinitive athorities in HomeTheater setups. Get this DVD and get it now... Now, if you have a Standard Telivision, and all-in-1 Hometheater setup... i.e. Hometheater in a box. Save yourself some cash and go rent StarWars Episode II and use the THX optimizer that is on the DVD. Using AVIA on a all-in-1 setup with an SDTV is overkill.

Go to the avsforum and search on AVIA, you find that this is still the defacto calibration disc for hometheaters. Keep in mind, after you run through this disc once and watch all of the primers and intro's you will most likely only use the test pattern portions of the disc following that. These are where the real value are.... and yes, they are still considered valid for HDTV calibration. About the only thing I wish it had was calibration support for the 6th channel in a 6.1 setup, i.e. the rear center channel. No big deal, but it would be nice to have. Not seen the S&V disc myself, but it seems be a pretty good choice too.

Also there is supposed to be a newer test disk from video essentials coming out soon
Digital Video Essentials which may be better for calibrating HDTV sets. The only problem is that its not out yet, just meant as a heads up

Avia and the S&V DVD are both from Ovation. Avia is more Techno oriented, but for 99% out there not needed. S&V does include a "Blue" filter for proper color adjustment also.

From Ovation:

Guy Kuo from Ovation Software had this to say: (after being asked what's difference since there is a large price difference...)

"HTT is a grounds up completely different disc from AVIA. The emphasis was on making the basics easier rather than the more encyclopaedic approach of AVIA. The primary video test patterns for user controls were modified from those in AVIA to incorporate the user experience we've had. For instance, the sharpness pattern in HTT is specially bandwidth limited to be more useful and less visually confusing when used with normal DVD players. The one in AVIA is super severe and almost always shows some false outlining unless a ultra high bandwidth player like a HTPC is used. The massive set of patterns in AVIA is not present, but a pretty useful set of "bonus" patterns are included. Those are sufficient to take care of 95% of advanced user needs. You'll find better grayscale windows and the finest possible detail crosshatch and focus patterns that can be put on DVD (progressive single pixel resolution). Audio tests are totally new and include support for both DTS and DD with rear center channels. It's not just an AVIA stripped down. It's a new disc with a different perspective.

Ovation Software, The Calibration Tool Source"

VE is also good but a bit dated. A new version is due out soon.

You can pick up the S&V one here:

Fry's $14.99 (got it 2 day ago there and used it last night on my 55" 16x9 HDTV)

Circuit City $15.99

Best Buy I think is $17.99

You can find Faqs and Reviews (Avia and S&V) here: www.ovationsw.com/

Cheers!
