I always used to see programs from ChrisPC being published at Major Geeks.com but I never had any interest.

Today, I tried installing ChrisPC WEI for Windows 8 just for fun.....

after downloading the file from their main site and installing it, I got the following warnings:

Please avoid this company at all costs!

I don't quite get what you are trying to illustrate. Companionware downloads, triggered from the installer of another program?

that after the installation of Chris PC WEI, the moment I hit finish on the installer I got these warnings so they are trying to inject malicious crap onto their users' PC to track them and God knows what else

Another hit caught by AdGuard:

Adguard has blocked access to this page
This web page at www.chris-pc.com has been reported as a malware page and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

Adguard has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it is possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. We recommend you to not proceed or try again later.

They're doing obvious search engine optimization. They have a "RAM Booster" program. Said program exits with an obviously fake error message when run in Anubis sandbox.

It's supposed to be a freeware license. Some of the others are bundleware. It came up clean according to virustotal.

However when I downloaded the rkverify.exe this is what I see at virustotal. https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/...b820b19b4ca0d8f9f2e20173/analysis/1426310319/

Emsisoft alerted me right away. It looks like a PUP/adware. After seeing the virustotal results it should prove that trusting in a single signature based product to protect you is insane.

Personally, I do not think I've downloaded a single thing from majorgeeks in over 10 years.

I'm just saying...

Majorgeeks and Softpedia usually let you know if a program comes with 'extras'. Lately though Majorgeeks seems to be falling behind. Either is much better than Cnet.

that's like my no.1 place to get software updates because they are nicely laid out. With File Hippo, they are set in categories so you don't see all the updates daily unless you click on a certain category then go to that program.....

1) why not Major Geeks? I know they do host Shark 007 codecs which is one of the biggest viruses on the planet and will demolish any system if installed on it without unticking everything

2) any other good site you recommend meh to check for updates?

I use Betanews/Fileforum a lot, and Major Geeks for a few programs I trust that don't show up on Fileforum. Then again, I don't download anything without doing some research first.

I also donate to the freeware authors I like so they aren't forced to bundle crap with their programs to keep food on the table.

My major source for program recommendations is from people on this forum. If enough people here say they like something, and it does something I want, I'll probably check it out. Same for enough people on some other forums

I don't think that the problem is with MajorGeeks than with software makers since many of them have decided to put various "extras" in their installations...

My favorite sites that I use daily are MajorGeeks.com and FileHorse.com...

You should also research a bit what are you trying to download and install and to be really careful when installing...

I get my stuff direct from the author's page.

Pretty much every program these days is able to auto-check for updates.

The only things that I have to go through a portal for tend to be game mods.
