AVX actually instructions used in any software besides prime95?

AVX instructions cause 4770k and haswell chips to spike in voltage when using adaptive vcore. This is a problem for overclocking as the voltage spike adds tremendous heat load and can render the system unstable.

My question is, besides the latest versions of prime95 and other specific cpu benchmarking programs like LINX, does any actual software 'in the wild' actually use AVX instructions?

If so, could one theoretically have some sort of background script running in their webpage, that utilises the instructions and therefore causes these vulnerable systems to overvolt and overheat?

If the overvolt causes the chip to get to hot or use to much power then it will downclock until its safe.

There might be small custom compiled things for super high performance research, but no not typically. There is usually a many year lag on mainstream use of most instructions from what I've seen. I recall reading somewhere that most programs are only compiled to use SSE2/3 even now.

i was going to mention that some distributed computing projects now make use the AVX and AVX2 instruction sets, but i suppose those fall under the category you just mentioned.

my buddy compiles his kernal every time he gets a new CPU, you bet he enables auto-vectorization and AVX2 instructions

commercially, nothing apart from specialized applications

Anything based on newer FFmpeg builds is using it for encoding. GRID 2 is a game coming with a AVX specific .exe thats being used if the CPU supports it.

I do a lot of video encoding so my 4770k is set to 1.205v manual voltage for 4.4Ghz, not using adaptive/offset modes to avoid the AVX voltage spikes.

Umm... ok that was unexpected. So I guess offset/adaptive overclocking is useless on 4770ks as running an AVX instruction process is kind of inevitable and 0.1vcore auto bump is just way too excessive.

Can the kernel use very much AVX2? Does the kernel even use very much floating point stuffs?

Anything built using a recent version of the Intel compiler can generate versions of the binaries using AVX2 (alongside versions using only SSE4.2, or SSE2, or even plain old x87).

AVX(2) can be used on integer operations as well. Compilers should be able to use these instructions on a pretty wide range of vector operations.
