Awesome College Prof Stories

so apparently my computer architecture prof walks into class at 9:30am and was hungover... he didn't even try to hide it. in fact he spent 20 minutes in class talking about how yesterday was PASSOVER and that he drank a lot of WINE... and I was already laughing my ass off. Then later on ~30 minutes into the lecture, he realizes did the wrong lecture... and he was all like "what to do what to do" in class... and me in my half assed semi awakened state (mind you 9:30 am in college is the equivalent of waking up at 5:30 am) shouted "look us in the eye and finish!"... then suddenly i thought of this: http://www.facebook.com/pages/If-so...look-them-in-the-eyes-and-FINISH/339517384052
and started laughing to myself... still can't stop laughing right now...

*edited* So apparently only a few of you picked up on the idea that this thread was suppose to be about "cool" college profs, and I know its my fault for not making this explicit. I also like to point out a few things I've now put in uppercase. The prof wasn't drunk or hungover drunk... just a little out of it hungover. He still gave a great lecture about Linkers in assembly language, compilers vs interpreters, and stacks in assembly but as he covered the wrong lecture nobody read the section. The reason i thought this was hilarious was that it was different from the normal routine drab that we do every single day. Also the fact that he is like 65 and retired (not retarded) and that he admitted to being hungover from wine in class... I know its a waste of money but our school doesn't think spending money on a good permanent professor is top priority right now... In fact we just blew part of our budget on the school's football program (not without good reason though... GO HORNS!) and our class is being taught by a on off sub-in who justs teaches to "get out of home". Hope that clarifies some things for you guys...

How does this make him cool? Most people in the real world would get fired for behavior like this.

Considering neither the professor or the OP are in the real world, I guess this passes for cool.

I agree with Zooyuka ... to be professional, you have to be able to perform your job, even when you are working through a self inflicted hangover.

Depends. We had a market data guy that used to get coked up on his lunch hour. Went on for months and finally his work product turned to complete shit and he was fired. Actually a really nice guy, I was sorry to see him go.

More of the down fall of the U.S.A. and what our next leaders will think is ok to do.

Sounds like a waste of money to me. But if you find value in it I guess that's all that matters.

Seems like a decent enough place for the following...

So yesterday I continued watching the "Up Series"
I've been watching a lot of documentaries on netflix instant, and this one looked interesting (or rather... the series of documentaries)

It was an experimental British documentary started in 1963 that interviewed several children at age 7. Then every 7 years, the crew would go back to these same individuals and ask them similar questions and caught up with what had happened in the 7 years between filming.

Questions involved thoughts about money, love, class distinctions, ambitions, etc.

They purposely interviewed children from different backgrounds (working-class, middle-class, upper-class)

Anyway, I was watching the 28 Up installment when it turned out that one of the boys who grew up in the country had moved to the United States. He was doing research at UW-Madison (where I currently work). I thought that was a pretty cool coincidence, since I had no idea that was going to happen when I started watching this series.

As the guy (now 28 as of 1977) talked about what he was doing, it was becoming clear that his background was similar to what I had studied at UW-Madison (physics).

So anyway, I looked him up on the current website and he's still here in Madison. I recognized him too. I took "Electrical and Computer Engineering 220" with him as a professor. Cool guy... one of the few memorable professors I've had at UW-Madison in the engineering department.

It was a very odd feeling to figure out that I personally knew this guy who I was getting to see grow up from age 7 in 1963 with this documentary.

Ok, that's my story.

You paid for that class.
Yeah, honestly I'd be pretty mad if my professor stumbled in hungover.

Although I do have a professor that I am reasonably sure has Alzheimer's he consistently stand infront of the class not knowing what to do or say and searching for words or trying to remember what he is talking about... then when he does speak he constantly makes mistakes and reverses orders and definitions.

He is teaching a Discrete structures class.

I'd be upset at my professor if he showed up hungover, and wasted my time. I don't always go to class, but if I'm paying for it and show up, I'd rather not have it be wasted time.

That's not awesome. You're paying to listen to this guy teach you material, not come in and ramble about stuff.

He's not doing his job. You're not getting what you paid for. Plus, you're not learning material which comparatively puts you at a disadvantage to where you should be.

Personally I'd rather have a prof who knew how to be goofy and still get the material done.

He taught, just the wrong material. Happens all the time, for one reason or another. His was being hungover and retarded, but could still be a great prof.
My opinion based on a brief amount of information is that it seems he knows how to present himself to young adults to get them actively listening.
That's more important than simply presenting material perfectly, imho. Everyone learns different. I learn my best from exciting professors who engage the class. Even if half the time is tangents and material only loosely related to the tested topics, I learn far more than someone who covers everything perfectly but blandly.

I drank with one of my favorite professors all the time... we got drunk on Bourbon St together and he made me eat a page out of the book of mormon; he later tried shoving another page up a dog's ass.

he never showed up to class hung over, though

If 9:30 is the college equivalent of 5:30, what's the college equivalent of waking up daily for university shit around 5:30?
ROTC is not for morning haters like myself. The Army is not for morning haters like myself. Regular workweek careers are not for morning haters like myself.
But I can tolerate them just fine, as long as coffee is within reach.

Come back and whine when you have "class" at 6:00am.

ROFL...

ive had a cooler prof...

He took our entire class out for beer after finals.
However the class was a mix graduate . undergrad upper division class, so the total class size was like 15!

But he challenged each of us to a drinking contest where if u won, you got an A.
But the entire class already had an A.

While we're trading professor stories, the coolest prof. i ever had was for my business strategy class. During the final (aka my last final ever), me and my buddy brought in beers, gave one to the prof, toasted him, and then drank while taking the final

Jealous! My prof only offered to bring food but gave up after realizing there were like 100 of us...
