Looks good to me, Punamo! I just didn't need the burner or modem (i'm on DSL and have a 12X VeloCD) so i got a system without them
I agree with the stability part, I have a Dell PIII 600 that has been totally trouble free since I got it.

The Dell systems are very stable. We use Dimension's where I work. Running Win2K. Mostly troublefree, with the exception of user induced problems.

This is a good deal.

believe it or not, i think the deal was even sweeter 2 weeks ago, they had their 175 off 1000 deal I think, and for 1009 bucks they were selling something like:

p4 1.3
128mb pc800(i think)
40gig 7200
geforce gts 32mb ddr
dvd drive,

I think that was the main stuff,

not 100% sure,

1009-175=834+shipping

almost bought it, woulda been BADA**, but I decided that a Tbird for 875 I coulda built a hell of a rig, plus i didnt have all of the money then.

a part of me still wishes I got it though

the rest of me is stairing at the case/cpu/ram thats waiting for the rest of my Tbird rig to come

Also my thanks to iwearnosox, this is the best savings i've got on this board yet. Looking forward to my new system!

BTW I updated the prices I got from Pricewatch.com above, I forgot the video card!! D'oh!

installing an os won't kill the warranty, but dell will tell you to reinstall from your application backup cd so they can verify that it's hardware and not software/os. They don't warranty anything but hardware. Microsoft does the OS (for a fee), and software manufacturers are *supposed* to handle software problems

lots of new stuff gets returned. Since its really expensive, so usually there are buyers lying and wanted returns, so they get lots of refurbs. Most of it should be good stuff

Thank you so much juser for the tip. My wife is an education employee and the additional 10% off will definitely help.

Not being a big computer whiz, does anyone have any recommendations for a nice configuration that will last for some time and is hopefully around $1500 or even less after the 10% discount?

Hate to burst your bubble guys, but those 1.3 and 1.4Ghz P4 systems with PC600 are slower than a 1Ghz P3 in pretty much EVERY current application. I even think the P3 will beat the P4 in its sweet spot, Quake3, because that PC600 RAM really blows.

I'd also like to disagree that a prebuilt computer is more stable than a custom built one. I bought a Gateway computer, had nothing but problems from it. After getting jerked around twice due to warranty info, I built my own. Guess what, 8 months of overclocked bliss later, NOT ONE PROBLEM! Compare that to the Gateway system blowing up a PS 1 month in(had to buy one on my own and cut my case up to install it if I didn't want to part with my computer for 4-5 MONTHS!), and constant problems with hardware. They did a really crappy install at the factory. They even forgot to install Intel ATA Storage drivers, so I was getting PIO4 data transfers.

Anyway, don't believe for a second a prebuilt computer is best. If you're too inexperienced to push a few cards in and install the right drivers, a prebuilt is for you. But if you have any computer experience at all, you should be able to build a better AND FASTER computer for about the same price.

Def, please see my post above where I priced out (using Pricewatch) a home built system vs the system I got from this sale. JUST the parts were almost $400 more, how can you say that would be cheaper? I also got the PC800 memory in the system I ordered. according to tests MaximumPC ran,in Quake3, it smoked a P3 1ghz and a 1.2 Tbird machine with the same vid card. True A p3 and a Tbird are faster in office applications, but personally, i'm not too excited if my word doc finishes a half a second faster.
True some prebuilt systems suck, but I think you'll have a hard time finding anyone who has gotten a bum PC from Dell.
But feel free to miss out on this offer, I'm sure someone who gets the pc you didn't buy will thank you for passing it up

dingdongdingdong, you are right most of the time. I have 2 home built systems at home now. I picked out the parts I wanted on the Dell system, like I said above, if i hadn't been so picky, I could have saved even more. Belive me, I priced it all out before I ordered this system. I saved hundreds with the Dell over building the EXACT same system myself.

def: if you plan on buying a computer for you needs NOW then go ahead and get a P3. But everything is being optimized for P4 ( SW, geforce 3 drivers, winXP, etc... ).

If you compare optimized code for P4 1.3Gig w/ PC600 it will still outperform any previous technology. If you dont take advantage of the newer features of the P4 then dont expect to see any increase of performance. When you do utilize the advantages, then it is a clear win....

I have a P3 1Gig and my roomate is running the Dell 1.5. We play around with SSE2 and compilier switches during some benchmarks and the P4 just pulls right ahead.... Beautiful system.

"because that PC600 RAM really blows": 2 chan PC600 = 2.4 GB/s, while PC133 = 1.064 GB/s...where do you get your information

It wouldn't be a such a bargain if it were such a great deal. We benchmarked the Dell P4 1.5 against a Dell PIII 1 Gig, and found almost no difference in performance. You might want to check out PIII 1Gig refurbs.

They haven't updated their "specials" page yet, but the 8100s are still discounted. They appeared to be priced at 15% off. Not as good as $300 off, but the selection has increased.
