The fan should be set to blow on the heatsink. This heatsink is not designed to have the fan suck the air off like the Alpha is. I will be installing one of these today on my system and we will see how it works compared to the Alpha 8045.

The CORRECT answer to this question (that is asked almost every week either here or in the HardForums) is to try both and see which is best. Different case layouts, obstructions, and airflow may produce different results. Thus, you must try both to see which works best in your specific setup.

Well the results are in and the AX7 Beats the Alpha 8045 by about 3C. After 1 day of testing this seems to be the norm to be about 3C cooler with the AX7. I like the AX7 and will be keeping it in the system. I was running about 15C over case temps before and now I am running 11 to 12C over case temps. I am running a XP2000+ overclocked to a actual 1750.

What's up with the bottom of the HS? It looks like it has some type of grooves cut in it. Is the bottom flat, or are there steps?
I ask because I love lapping

It's flat...be kinda stupid if it was stepped. Just leftover machining marks...works fine.

I'd assume so...most other heatsinks I've seen have something similar in terms of small hole like marks.

Your CPU should only come in contact with an area inside those 4 marks.
