I guess I should also mention that NSCS does have a chapter at my local college, I haven't been to any of the meetings because of my work schedule. As I think someone may have mentioned, they are a service organization and I do try to participate in volunteer activities that interest me as my time allows me to do so.
How much that really comes out of paying for membership is going to vary from person to person, as a resume thing, it highly depends on the company you are looking to work for. My current job could careless about the things I do outside of work, they saw my technical skills and I was hired on that. Then there have been jobs where they looked for your outside interest because they want well rounded individuals working for them.
I'm still in college, so I can't really comment on how much of an advantage if any that it's going to give you when you interview for your "career job". Hopefully at some point my work schedule allows me to participate more actively with the organization because I do enjoy the new types of experiences that volunteering gives me with fairly low pressure. I?ve worked with little kids, taught old folks, done tax prep work, and a bundle of other things. I know I was free labor, but I found out what all those things were like without a lot of pressure to do well.
If you have no interest in any type of volunteering, then don?t waste the 75 bucks. Go buy a new hard drive or something.
