August 3rd & 4th at Bay Area Fry's they are ]hawking the boxed Athlon XP2500+ CPU and a VIA KT600 board for $59.99.

The boxed CPU comes with a reasonably quiet fan & a 3 year warranty. I believe all 2500+ processors are Bartons.

The board is almost certainly by ECS, which has never been a by-word for high quality, but VIA has been making the KT series for a long time, so hopefully most of the teething problems are worked out. The board has onboard Serial ATA, 6 channel sound, and of course LAN & USB 2.0.

Fry's is generally pretty good about keeping its sale items in stock, but I understand this may not be available in San Jose.

Am I the only one, or are other people having trouble posting to this forum using Mozilla or Firewhatever, even with the popup manager disabled?

That's a pretty good price. An OEM 2500+ Barton runs about $80 right now. And a retail version is ~ $85. Just sell the mobo or something and pick up a better one.

1 year warranty through fry's. And if you have buyer's protection on your credit card, that makes it two years.

Thanks for post. As already mentioned, the SoCal area ad has a different item. I wonder if our local stores would "honor" (in quotes because we're talking about Fry's here) an out of area ad?

What was the mobo that this combo came with? I hear it was a PC chips, but do not know the chip set. Can you give me a model number or anything?

Thanks for any help.

I was lucky getting the last one at Fremont Fry''s around 6:30pm. The code is KQYHA, week 0416. Is this batch good?

Dislike the motherboard though. Thinking about what i gonna do with it. Thanks for headup.

The board it comes with is the ECS KT600-A

Spec wise it's alright. You should be able to hit 3200+ easy with using the 400FSB so ocing with this board should be ok. Not the greatest but good. Supports SATA/RAID 0/1. Onboard audio is "decent". Has an Ethernet port. For what you pay for, you're getting a pretty good board. Only qualms I have about this board is that the NB HSF is a passive one. Gets pretty hot even under idle conditions.

Granted, ECS boards aren't the best, but if you're looking for a no-frills board, you can't go wrong here.

What is the deal with this board "supporting sempron"? Fry's is not going to try and slip a sempron chip in with this combo are they? That would be a little sleezy.

Is this board better than ECS's K7VTA3?
Are we sure that is a barton? I don't see any mention of it on the ad.

Edit: Not available today in the Phx area. Perhaps tomorrow.

What he's saying is that Fry's also has (in his case in the Los Angeles / Orange County area) a motherboard and AMD 2200+ combo for $49. (on sale Wed and Thurs). He is hinting that though the ad says you only get the bare CPU (no heatsink or fan included) and the motherboard, they in fact sold him a boxed version which usually includes the heatsink and fan and includes a longer warranty.

This deal is also available in NorCal at the Sacramento Frys and the Concord Frys. Not sure about other bay area locations.

After seeing that notice on sempron, I called and they told me it was a Barton. It would be suck if it was sempron. Basically a Duron.

If you looked at the pic closer, that's just the link to the manufacturer website for the board. The "Sempron" pic is just stating that it'll support the microcode of the upcomming Sempron chips.

I realize that, but because the mobo does support the sempron, and the ad does not specify "barton" and it is such a low cost, and it is Fry's I thought there was the POSSIBILITY that it might be a sempron, not a barton.

I think one would have to admit, AMD really confused things by giving similar code names. An extreme example is the 2800+ . Just knowing it is a 2800+ tells one very little. It could be a socket A Sempron 2800+, a Athlon XP "barton" 2800+, a 754 sempron 2800+ or an AMD64 2800+. see AMD's sempron FAQ here; https://http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_861_11546%7E88040,00.html

Sorry about the lack of a link, but it kept taking me to Microsoft. I loaned my brain out tonight.

Of all these cpu/mobo combos offered by Fry's, do they ever ofer a microATX mobo?

That I've seen, no, they don't offer microATX boards in their combos. P

Personally, I've had good experiences w/ the ECS K7VTA3 v8.0 mobo. I've built several PC's for friends and family that keep chugging along using Fry's cpu/mobo deals. Not too sure about this KT600 mobo, might just have to pick one up and see how it goes. Not a bad deal though.
