You tried to lecture me on the definition of a word, before doing that insure that you know the definition of said word. I didn't want to get technical, but you tried to imply I was wrong when I wasn't. Using the English language isn't about being technical.

Personally I think it's disturbing. I think the child should decide when and if they want to do it, but I wouldn't call it abuse.

I remember a story once, it might have been on this forum, when someone's sister was babysitting their daughter and got the daughters ears pierced. The parents were livid.

I know some people that had their children's ears pierced before they were a year old. I don't have children, and wouldn't allow this to happen at such a young age. I don't think its child abuse though.

99% (I made that up) of women in the US have their ears pierced and wear earrings.
Having a baby's ears pierced is very common and the baby usually doesn't even cry.

Even if you wait until they are older (5-10), they will definitely get them pierced because mommy and friends have them pierced.

My niece's ears were pierced at around 6mo. and she is American/Caucasian.

I remember when my sister went to get her ears pierced (I think she must've been in her mid to late teens then). She was concerned about how much it would hurt, and the person doing it said, in an attempt to be reassuring, "It's only like a beesting."
I'm guessing this person had never been stung by a bunch of pissed-off bald-faced hornets, which will gladly sting several times at once, injecting about a half-liter of plutonium-laced venom with each sting. That's after they lock the door to your house and slash your tires to ensure that you can't get away.
So yeah, "It's only like a beesting" didn't go over well in terms of alleviating any apprehension.

Just about as practical as dicing off a woman's breasts right after puberty - 0% risk of breast cancer. Or at least cut off one to reduce the risk considerably.

i have no idea why in the world people would want to pierce their babie's ears. Babies already have so many different pains and reasons they cry for no reason. Why would you add one more reason for a baby to cry in to the mix. My daughter is 9 months old and I plan on waiting until she is in her teens and when she can make the decision.

I don't think it hurts an infant too bad. They are pretty damn resilient creatures. However I would not do it just because you invite the issue of infection. Plus, kids are not careful or aware of what they are always doing and the kid could hook the earring on something while playing, or even pull/tug on them themselves. It just kind of seems pointless and unnecessary risk.
