Its cute to watch... until you think of the ramifications. Our kids are growing up with artificial interaction with the world. I wonder what the long term effects will be on cause/effect and spatial reasoning.

I don't think it will have that much of an effect - if anything - it will cut down on possible paper cuts, ripped pages, and recycling costs.

It will take a long time to adapt [maybe 30-50 years] - but "touch screens" will become common place that paper is no longer needed.

Meh. The kid doesn't have a concept of an tablet PC or a magazine. She's a year old. What she notices is that some of the flat, colorful items mother gives her move and others don't. Oh the hugemanatee. Cute kid though.

This is pretty much my thought as well. At that age, they just try actions they know got results. The video is simply the author transferring his own thoughts to her. It's equally possible she just likes how the shiny, slippery glossy paper feels and uses the same motion to experience it.

At first I thought OMFG, these kids and their technology, WTF is gonna happen! Then i realized its pretty much the same shit as picking up a magazine or a book. As long as kids read there is hope.

Just try to read what some of these little retards are writing, they can't even form sentences anymore without the texting shit muddling up the language. This kid will probably be queen of the retards.

I bet that baby also shits its pants. Are you also worried that future generations are going to be pant-shitters?

I don't think a baby not being able to tell the difference between pictures on 2 different mediums is anything to be worried about.

You guys are srsly falling for the video? Just look at how quickly it cuts between scenes, and how some of them don't imply anything in the slightest. At 0:35 she's just pulling off a sticker, at 0:41 she doesn't even do anything except poke the page once, and the scratching movement she makes a few times on the magazine is something she doesn't even repeat for the iPad.

How so? Its manufactured, yes, but every page is tangible and all the content is static. Its an instrument of language. You move it, you rip it, you fold it. When I say that electronic devices are artificial, I'm talking about the interaction with it. Sure the device itself is tangible but the output is synthetic.

What it comes down to is - when the child plays with an object, is the object helping them learn about the world around them, or is the object removing them from the world?

The differences you point out are inconsequential. The ipad is tangible and the content is static, if virtually unlimited. Its like a magazine with a trillion pages. Everything you see on it is a form of language. That you should be able to fold or rip something marks it as more synthetic than the original instrument of language, which is the spoken word. No one can argue that many forms of synthetic communication havent added significantly to human knowledge.

Your last point is valid though. A tablet in an infants hands can teach certain things, but they're all things about the human world. I believe that to a certain extent, we're wired to be exposed to the natural world as well.

Oh Apple, why don't you wither into nothingness. I shall dream of it tonight.

In ios 5.1 apple should introduce a "baby mode", ala silent/loud profiles, wherein you cant delete stuff, send messages, some apps restricted, etc
