I regularly check the prices for the season sets for Babylon 5 and just noticed a price drop from around $75 a season to $45 a season. Deep Discount DVD has an individual price slightly less than Amazon at $43.55 per season with free shipping. Overstock only has the 5 season set, but for only $207. It makes me wonder if they are going out of production. I guess time to finish my collection.

I'd have to say the new Battlestar Galactica is the best sci-fi show, but it's all a matter of preference. =]

On a related note, the Star Trek movies are all supposed to be $10 now and Enterprise is due for a price drop soon.

Overstock is sitting at $350+ for it... so they are a no go, especially since deepdiscount has if for $217.

Story Arch wise.. B5 is the best ever.. however

Acting.. I would make a very strong argument for Battlestar. Its plot is up there but not near as complex or compelling as b5.. The acting on b5 is not done as well.. sheridan, ivonava, and a few others needed some more practice.. londo, gkar, vir, linear were pretty good. Marcus was good too. The monologues were great, espicially g'kars.

If you have never seen b5.. watch it.. The special effects are laughable compared to battlestar.. but keep in mind they are at least 10 yrs old, and even then arent that bad..

as for a synopsis of b5.. whoa.. trust me and others when i say it would take at least a 10 page thread to cover the first 3 seasons.. the last two would probably take another 10. Its a great story.. Watch the movies they made too. Specifically "In the beginning"

if you are a sci fi fan.. this series was a must.

The funniest thing is.. with all the characters.. everyone has a different favorite..

My favorite characters were londo and g'kar.. their stories were incredibly intertwined

Hot hot hot! This was my favorite scifi series up until Firefly, and still stands apart from the rest. I remember watching these when they aired and the special effects were mind boggling at the time, not to mention the gritty realism of the environment and the continuity of the plot lines when compared with competing scifi of the time (ie ST:TNG). The acting, well, in some places it can be pretty shoddy (all three captains) but in others (Londo in particular) it is convincing, and the writing makes it work in any case. Great show, cannot recommend highly enough. The first two seasons turned many away with a cheese overdose, but they hooked me (as a kid admittedly) and it only got better from there on. I'm in for the set!

Without hesitation, yes!
JMS - in a league of his own.

G'Kar was my favorite and I considered Andreas Katsulas one of the greatest actors, ever.
In Memoriam:

R.I.P

PS The Legend of the Rangers, imho, had that winning potential that makes for legendary SCIFI. If only it had been allowed to flourish. (In the light of H5N1, this show was prophetic.)

For those who haven't seen B5, the writing for the show was truly novelistic. As an example: there are unexplained events in the very first episode that foreshadow things that happen at the end of season 3, with an amazing payoff. It was truly dumbfounding to watch the series at the time and realize how much forethought had gone into it. JMS clearly had the entire 5-year arc ready to go from Day 1.

ST:TNG obviously couldn't compare at that level. (Whoops! It was a time-loop / alternate dimension / alien impersonator -- so don't worry, nothing's really changed after every 48 min. episode.) ST:TNG did have better lead actors, though.

B5's plotline is very similar to Lord of the Rings -- except played out at much, much greater length.

The best B5 episodes are still probably the best sci-fi TV I have ever seen, although there were some clunkers, too. (Cheese factor, as mentioned above. But you learn to like it as you watch.) The special effects after season 1 hold up pretty well, though nothing like BSG today.

B5 was awesome sci fi series.
Definitely worth watching if you havent. The first couple of episodes might be bland but pratically all the rest of the episodes are great.

I couldn't get into this show. I honestly tried but found it dreadfully boring. Everyone kept telling me I had to "give it a season", but really, I couldn't see the point in watching an entire season of a show I didn't like just so I might start liking it. I do know a lot of people who think it's awesome, but I just wanted to point out that there are a few of us who didn't care for it at all.

The first season is the weakest as he said. Its mostly important for setting up the rest of the series. You may be one of the only people I've ever known to not like it. I still love this series more than any other Sci-Fi series including Battlestar and Firefly, thats saying a lot for me.

Also IMHO probably one of the most memorable scifi TV series I've ever seen, though I'm a huge fan of the new Battlestar series. I've sat through the entire thing at least twice, including Crusades.

If you're looking to get into this series but aren't sure where to start, check out the special "In the Beginning" which actually was aired I believe between season 3 and 4, right in the middle of the Shadow War. Its available on netflix. It tells a the story before the beginning of season one and gives a glimpse of post-Shadow War. Its a wonderful, epic, made for TV movie, right at the maturity of the series, and covers alot of ground that doesn't entirely give way to any huge spoilers. Granted, there's some stuff that won't be understood, but its still a nice introduction.

I would also say feel free to skip over a few episodes in season one. Many are toally filler as the cast developed their own character, and got a feel for where they stand in the whole scheme of things...

I suppose if you really really really dont want to watch it, at least catch a few episodes from seasons 3 and 4. It would be unfortuante to see these out of context, but there are some real winners in there that hold their ground even without back-story.

Best line - Ivonova: "You are about to go where...everyone has gone before!"

This series had cameos from a lot of ST people as well as many actors. They all realized the magnitude and depth of the series. I am a huge BSG fan and am about to watch Firefly, but for overall insight, nuances, and depth of plot, nothing compares to B5. If you enjoy reading well written novels, this is a show after your own heart.

I also agree. The acting in season one starts out pretty bad, but it only improves from there. Look back at the acting in the beginning of STNG. It needed a lot of maturing, too.

right thats why I think that the first season is by far the weakest of them all, but man seasons 2,3,4 are just non stop pratically.
Ok there's season 5 which many might say really isn't a legite season
The best scene I think is when they are at the council and londo and gkar are yelling at each, Londo referring to gkar as ''citizen gkar' and then gkar totally going off. damn that was pretty intense.

One thing about B5 is that it swung for the fences. Making G'kar into a religious figure could have been a little dicey. Or showing the gradual dissolution of Alpha Centauri on a micro-micro-budget was pretty gutsy. I also loved how it gave so many characters so much depth. There were at least 20 major characters over the series' run.

The best scene has got to be when Sheridan visits the Shadow homeplanet and sees his long-dead wife -- who everybody in the audience knows is Bruce Boxleitner's real-life wife, Melissa Gilbert -- and then blows everything up. Absolutely thrilling. They knew how to save the FX budget for the important moments.

sheesh... trying to pick out a favorite scene?

delenn confronting marcus about unloading his burden?

maybe...

G'kar's monologue at the end of season 3....

maybe..

bester tossing out the psi guy... (when he jetesons the crazy guy out a airlock in hyperspace.. forgot what episode)

maybe..

londo being stuck in an elevator with gkar... priceless..

gkar and londo.. the story between them alone is a series.

"Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recomendations. Ivanova is God. And, if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out!"

Ivanova says "just get it!"
