The guys over at www.tigerdirect.com are selling the K6-3s that everyone seems to be takin a real shinin to...

I have one that overclocked to 600 w/ minimal heatsink/fan

Its a nice processor that doesnt seem to ever crash. I have heard reports of these babies workin over three months without any downtime. A freind of mine had a K63-350 that went 2 years without crashing...

Anyhoo...

heres the link:

K6-3 450 Link

With all the people buying these things with no guaruntee from pc liquidators, I thought this would be a nice option

BTW, mine was shipped next day air for 11 dollars....not too shabby

One of the K6-3+450's I got from PCliquidators is running 6x100 2.2V
on a P5A using an old P5 Cooler Master @ ~40-50C depending on CPU Util.

IIRC Tiger has one of the worst resellerratings scores, but they've also
run away to Yahoo Shopping which hopefully forces them to be more accountable.

If these are same as pcliquidators sells, then yes, they are super socket 7.

I threw my old K6-380 in an old system w/ a Soyo socket 7 MB...IS the 550MHZ chip the highest AMD makes in socket 7? If so, post some hot deals, as I'd like to get a little more juice in the system ...see them on fleabay for around 80 clams with a heatsink and fan, which is crazy to me...given the price of a low-cost duron and the like...

<< I can get duron 650Mhz for about the same price and why should i pay for this? (unless for your OLD mobo) >>

You summed it all up there in the last statement... It's a whole lot cheaper the Duron + MB + Ram....

Its amazing to me that so many people still critique these deals without thinking about total investment to get a new mobo/chip system going.

THIS deal is for EXSISTING ss7 and s7 mobo owners...sheesh!!

We would like to be able to upgrade the old K6-2 300s sitting around in the back closet that have no use...

A k6-3 oc'd to 600 is a snappy little server, or side gaming machine. Combined with my v3 3000, the K6 plays Unreal Tournament as nice as some of the newer more expensive systems out there...

of course, thats UT for ya...

I have ordered 3 things from them during the past two weeks, and although they are rude as all get out on the phone, all items shipped and arrived in a timely manner, well packed and nicely priced (item+s/h total)

I dont know about that reseller ratings thing, most people only go there to complain, never to say that the service was good. And with enough customers, your always going to have problems here and there...

Shoot, name one person who hasnt had a problem with buy.com or amazon....I know I have...

MickySoft:

Old laptops.

forcesho:

K6-3+ require 2.1 or 2.2V MAX for VCORE.

Trifecta:

2.9 out of 58 Tiger
6.3 out of 72 Amazon
4.6 out of 930 Buy

Tiger only does well in the prices category. The ratings is more of an indication
of likelihood or problems for some puchasing population. Some retailers do have
very good ratings with large sample populations--not as much as Buy though.

and your point is???

The point I was trying to make is that so many people write bad comments and very few bother to go write something good. The vast majority of people who have satisfactory customer service are NOT going to go fill out a reseller ratings form if they dont get somekind of immediate benefit.

I am just saying, I bought three things from them all during the last week. All came within 1 to 2 days, and all were well packed, and each item came with a guaruntee!! something that pcliquidators was NOT offering with their AMD K63 chips...

That's impossible. Read the article Anand just put up, and you'll see that the K6-3 was released in February '99 - about a year and 9 months ago. Also, I'm pretty sure that the K6-3 just came in 400+ speeds. You sure it wasn't a K6-2?

Anyway, good deal...I know a couple people with SS7 systems that could use this = ) (wasn't trying to crap on your thread, just making sure facts were straight)

Trifecta:

Since you were so skeptical of the validity of resellerratings:

"I dont know about that reseller ratings thing, most people only
go there to complain, never to say that the service was good.
And with enough customers, your always going to have problems
here and there..."

I reiterated Tiger has a poor score in RR. And "the ratings is
more of an indication of likelihood or problems for some
puchasing population." i.e. given the number of response a
certain percentage would be bad as you said but the score is
an indication of the probable service as "some retailers do
have very good ratings." Those scores are valid is not precise
same as the database at overclockers.com is valid but not
precise.

That's true about PCL but "Tiger has one of the worst
resellerratings scores."

There were 350s in laptop's though 2yrs is long.

hmmm,

valid but not precise. Validity is a marked and loaded comment when it comes to "likelyhood that a,b or c might happen" While I cannot speak for tigerdirects past or present problems with customer service, I still disagree with the whole "Reseller Ratings shows that there is a likelyhood of a poor customer service experience with company'xyz'..." I do think that people must pay attention to these RRs but dont let a potential good deal pass you buy with a site that has had many positive AND negative experiences...

case in point.

I once bought a video card from sg3d.com. After a month of using the card, I decided that the performance level was not what I wanted. I called the CS guy and began to talk with him about my disappointment with the level of performance in the sdr based geforce cards. I mentioned to him that I didnt know that the ddr cards were so much better and I would have bought one had I known. His response was, why dont you send it back, we will give you credit for the card you bought and send you a ddr card. I jumped on it and they sent it to me BERFORE I even sent out my exsisting card. That way I was able to use the sdr card until I got the new one.

Now, go check the Reseller ratings on sg3d. They are very poor. but I have found every purchase with that company to be extremely good. I exclusively buy all my video cards from them (unless I get a really hot deal somewhere )

This is just another example of how Reseller Ratings often just shows alot of pissy comments that customers like to flame about. dont rely on RR exclusively

I would have no problem HIGHLY recommending sg3d for anyones video card purchase, or for that matter a chip purchase from tigerdirect.

Any recommendations on a mobo that isnt too expensive?

I'd like to upgrade this system... currently cel300a -> 450, 196 megs of ram, rivatnt....

however, I don't need a gaming machine or server or anything like that.... looking for more speed when rendering graphics, etc. Hopefully <$100?

Thanks.

Could we be a little less accusatory and perhaps concentrate on the matter at hand please?

One of these and an older ss7 Mobo would make a good server, secondary system, or cheap primary.
Thank you Trifecta for pointing out the deal.
The rest of the comments made are negative and don't reflect in any way on the matter at hand. You don't like Tiger? Great shop elsewhere, that is after all what capitalism is all about. However Trifecta shouldn't get the heat of your commentary. He was trying to be helpful.

RANT OFF..............

Trifecta:

Of course one should do their own research! In my original post
I was merely pointing out the poor score so everyone who didn't
would know they have had many unhappy customers. You may have
had good experiences with different customers but that doesn't
mean that RR is incorrect, it's just another resource. And
again, of course one should do their own research!

forcesho:

Many don't and the datasheet specs 2.2V as the absolute maximum
voltage and not just a high voltage.

weasel:

Should be able to find a cheap Epox on e-bay.

Crusis:

Accusatory? The tone of this thread has not been so. If you accuse
me of being so you should also mention Trifecta in this little
spiel on RR. Again, the tone of this thread has not been accusatory
except in your mind.

>One of these and an older ss7 Mobo would make a good server,
>secondary system, or cheap primary

Yes, I've got three doing odd things.

Negative? In what way? I was merely pointing out Tiger's poor record
in RR and hoping informing others.

Heat?

>He was trying to be helpful.
Yes, appreciated but I thought it warranted that the RR results be known.

I almost bought the "andara mobo" with AMD athlon 750 chip and fan, for 129 from overstock.com last night. but I've never heard of andara, and so I thought that I would wait. I am going to put together a duron 600 (possibly overclocked to 900) and a mobo. what is the cheapest mobo that I can find? thanks..I am eyeing on this mobo (it can support only intels)
http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11017495&m=488&cat=552&scat=555...but seems to be way too expensive. should I buy the mobo (OEM Pentium III) listed for 39 bucks at overstock??? http://www.overstock.com/sub272999.html

buckeye,

I have had nothing but success with my Asus A7V, go to the motherboards forum and do some searches for socket a solutions. Both the Abit and Asus have their critics and supporters.

The one complaint I have about the A7V is that I must use the dip switches to overclock.

The Abit has a much better solution for overclocking in the bios...

in any case, I still recommend the Asus with the promise controller for up to 4 more drives with ATA100...

The motherboard forums are great, I really recommend getting more info there...

Well, well, well...

I must say that this k63+ chip does VERY nice!

Im at 600, with stock voltage on an Azza (?) 5VMD board.

Combined with my voodoo 3 3000, I am sitting at 58 fps in Q3 on HIGH QUALITY!!!!!

I dont know why my framerate is so high for these two outdated peices of equipment, but I am definately not complaining!!!

Hurry and grab yours while the supply lasts, Tiger has now sent me 7 items and all have arrived on time, with 9 dollars shipping for 2nd day air. (airborne express will leave the package at your doorstep btw...

If you have an old socket 7 that will support this chip, I cant say how much the 50 bucks is sooooo worth it!
