Ok so im looking for a new storage drive to go with my raptor and was wondering what to get i think i've narrowed it down to this seagate drive Seagate and this maxtor drive Maxtor and i want your guys help to get the perfect one. It needs to be reliable first and foremost then speed then noise. Please say why you choose the hard drive and if you say other please list it. I have about 150 to spend but less money is always better.

If you want reliability first and foremost do not consider any other drive but Seagate.

Maxtor is ok at everything but reliability... I've never had so many problems with any 1 given company than I have with Maxtor's garbage hard drives.. utter trash.

Save the hassles and go with Seagate!

Thanks you guys for saving me money, so is the 16mb buffer not worth it or do maxtor drives just die to fast to use it?

Maxtor drives do not die fast. Especially the MaxlineIII which comes with 5 year warrantly + it has "Ultra-reliable: designed for 1 million hours MTTF" because it's designed to run 24/7

Seagate as in barracuda, other models i don't know much about. Maxtor is also good since i have used it & sold it too, never had any reliability prob. My current HDD is 80GB seagate baracuda and 160GB Western Digital SATA forgot the model.

Get the WD Raptors - I got a couple of 36gb's as my OS and Games drives.

Only SATA (or IDE for that matter) that do 10krpm which does make a nice difference in performance

Only down side is largest available is 74GB

Seagate, all the way. Avoid Maxtors like the plague.

BTW, both your links are to M$

everyones hard drives have died, no matter what the brand. everyone has had good and bad experiences with every brand. dont listen to the fanboys here that have been burned. be safe, get the one with the longer warranty and back up your data.

The best HD's would be the Seagate Cheetah's 15000k RPM SCSI drives....I have 3 ..but they are berry berry spensive...

My (IDE) maxtor makes a nice clicking noise then freezes my system when it writes data to a certain spot on the drive.. I'm replacing it with a Seagate

Yes, that is correct. The first time any file operation is performed it will only fill up to 8MB of the 16MB cache before the drive fails. The MTBF is measured in nanoseconds. The entire industry is aware but has joined in the conspiracy for reasons I dare not utter.

Perhaps the anecdotal claims of failures are higher because Maxtor has a greater retail presence than other manufacturers? Nub buys retail... botches handling and installation, etc.
