Home Depot has 500' of Cat5e for around $35 all year round...not bad if you don't want to pay shipping. And even if you're wiring every room in your house, do you really need 1000'? I've made countless cables here and there for myself and other people, wired my parents basement to their 2nd floor and still have at least 200-250' feet left.
I've already run 1000' of Cat5 cable in my house and have a few more locations to go. I want each connection to be direct to my 100Tx switch/router from the basement and all the second floor rooms travel from basement to attic and then down into walls. Running two connections in most rooms from patch panel (also doubles just fine for phone - little overkill , eh). Now to find some way to power all those locations from the UPS I got from Compgeeks last year (2400VA Delta) j/k The inexpensive continuity tester is a nice addition - it's a pain to chase down an unreliable connection by trial and error (& error....). Thanks for the posting.
