Sorry to make poo poo on your thread Mr. Joker but these knives are as much Sabatier as I am the king of France. They are made in China, low end knives relabeled for Sabatier, a prostitution of their fine name. No one in their right mind would pay, or has ever paid the "list" price of $288. All that being said, $50 is a fair price for this set, just not the "bargain" that Amazon makes it out to be.

Sorry for the blank post above. This is my first forum post, so be gentle on me, mighty senior members!

actually, jokersmoker is an elite member, but thats beside the point. i think this is a hot deal, and you get more than what you pay for. granted, they are not worth nearly 288, but definitely more than 50.

Yes, the real ones are made by The Coneheads, "in France". The fake
ones are made by coneheads in China.

The fake ones basically use the
same designs as the real ones, but the workmanship and materials
are inferior. These are reasonably priced at $50. It is not worth
even mentioning the supposed list price on these, as that is
ridiculous. I doubt that a single set of these has ever been sold
for $288. And to quote that number, except with the appropriate
caveot, is a mistake (I think).

I am a big fan of both Sabatier and Henckels (and I cook a lot, and have spent a bundle on knives). I agree that this set cheapens the Sabatier name; however, they are NOT crap. It's definitely a good set of knives, particularly so for someone who doesn't use them hard - has everything you need, not a bad feel, etc. They don't hold an edge too well, so if you cook a lot you are better off spending the extra money and getting a good set (expect to spend $150 - 400 for a set like this).

I just love comments like this - I have heard that people who make comments about stuff they have never tried, suck.

If you don't like your friend, order it when it was $25 last Friday, and send it to him. Otherwise, don't buy this set for $50.

That's classic.

I heard that people who've heard that other people who've heard that stuff sucks that they've never tried sucks, suck, suck. Okay, that didn't exactly make sense, but it was worth a shot.

Anyway ... I bought a similar Sabatier set on sale from Amazon, and they don't suck. If you're a stickler about the knives keeping their sharpness, just sharpen them quickly every time you use them, and NEVER put them in the dishwasher. ALWAYS wash by hand and dry them right away.

If you have the $ to spend, get a FORGED (rather than stamped) steel set from Henckel's or Wusthoff. But then again, since you'd be paying six times the price, you should make sure that those knives are 600% better than the made-in-China Sabatier.

Actually, would be hard, since they weren't on the Friday sale. There was, however, a smaller set on the Friday sale.

I picked up a couple of these from Amazon over a year ago for around $40 each and didn't keep either one. My bro is pretty happy with the set I gave him, but I'm not sure just how hard they're used when making mac & cheese. The other set I sold.

The one thing I noticed about my brother's set is that it tends to rust fairly easily so if you buy these, don't let them sit around wet. Overall, a decent set for your average college kid, but real chefs (which I don't pretend to be) probably wouldn't be too happy with them.

I think you may be thinking of different knives; these are stainless and don't rust. I leave them wet in the dish drier all the time (although this is NOT something you should do to really good knives...and in fact I do dry the Henckels knives ).

Ive got Henckels, Wusthoff (sp?), Victorinox and Chicago Cutlery. Honestly, I think the first three listed are about the same. As for the Chicago Cutlery, I think they are indeed a notch below, but still pretty good knives--I like them. But, I love the first three--those things with just a few strokes sharpen to the most wonderfully fine edge.

If you even cook a little, invest in a set of nice knives. They make cooking much more enjoyable. I find the lesser lines of any of the known names to be much inferior to the premium lines. We got Henckel steak knives once as a gift, and they were the "forever sharp" type of things. Just bad, bad, bad.
