Yeah, just got the email too. Not sure if it's advertised on the site, but you need to enter the coupon code of "thermalright" before the $10 discount can be applied at the point of sale.

Ordered one myself even though I don't need it just yet

that's true? if so, there already is a 900-U, that's bolt on. are you saying the 900U and 947 are the same thing?

Doh! I figured that out seconds after I posted. I just ordered a few minutes ago and hadn't gotten around to correcting my post.

BTW.. Priority Mail and First Class were the same cost at $6.25 for me. UPS Ground was $7.15. Priority Mail is definitely the cheapest and best bang for the buck here.

Thanks for the deal. I got the SVC email, but I missed this deal. I am not an overclocker, but have been dealing with some CPU heat issues. I am confident that this HS, a 92 Panaflo and Artic Silver will fix it.

What about the Vantec Stealth fan? It's rated at 20 db. The Papst fan doesn't seem all that quiet at 23 db for this application. I would've expected the Papst fan to be a little quieter.

I have never used the Vantec, but they are notorious for rating their fans quieter than they actually are.

thank you so very much. i waited for something like this. like someone in this string, I also got the smart case fan II to go with this at a total of 29.99. I was thinking of getting the tornado fan but thats a 15.00 fan and it does not come with a speed controller. That is an additional 15.00. So if you are getting the tornado fan, the fan and its accessories will be greater in cost that your heatsink. think about it. 29.99 vs 49.99.

Fits those asus mobos' just fine. They are re-designed from the slk900u's and have the fins more contoured so they aren't in the way of capasitors. Sroll down here for pics of it on the asus.

Super deal for the 900A. Amazin'!

thanks blade I didn't see your post before and oh yeah w00 h00

Yes - I've listened to an 80mm Vantec and a Panaflo L1A side-by-side and the Panaflo is definitely quieter and has less distinctly audible frequencies in the noise pattern. Also agreed that this is an amazing deal with a 92mm M1A! Hard to pass up...

I was going to order it, but I don't believe them. I did a test about a year ago when the Vantec's first came out. I compared the Panaflo L1A to the PC Power and Cooling and the Vantec Stealth all at 80 mm. The Vantec was rated at 21 db, the Panaflo about 24 db and the PC Power and Cooling Silencer at 20 db. The Silencer was the quietest fan with the Panaflo coming in second. The Vantec Stealth was definitely the loudest of the three by a considerable margin IMO. I even tested it on a few people for a blind test and the Stealth always came out to be the loudest.

That being said, I went ahead and ordered the Zalman ZM-F2 for $5.99. It's rated at the same 20 db as the Stealth, but at 38 cfm instead of 28 cfm. I figure that I don't need to run a 92 mm fan if I can't get better air flow while getting low noise. My PC Power and Cooling Silencer at 80 mm is rated at 20 db and 28 cfm. Why change if you're getting the same noise and cfm at 92 mm vs a 80 mm fan?

Now.. I know that all noise is not created equal. The larger fans make a lower noise and the smaller ones make a higher pitched noise. I can't see a ton of difference between an 80 and 92 mm fan though. Maybe I'm wrong.. I'll start with this Zalman fan for $6 (shipped with my heat sink) and then go to a different fan if I need to.

One thing is that I'm suprised about the Papst ratings. Usually their fans are super quiet, but their 92 mm is only rated at 23 db. That's kind of loud for a low speed Papst fan IMO. I wonder what the Panaflo L1A or PC Power and Cooling Silencer is rated at for a 92 mm fan? I'll have to check it out.

pretty good solution I think
Looks like the resister makes run at 5.5V. Or you could do the easy 7V mod (no parts needed) instead, if you wanted a little more flow. And for that matter, if you're like me and haven't heard anything about Zalman fans, I guess you could get pretty much any fan, like the Panaflo M1A someone else mentioned, and run it at 7V if needed.
I wish there was a way to undervolt LED vans without affecting the LED output.

I don't care if it runs at 5.5v as long as it starts fine and gives you 38 cfm. Otherwise, I'll just go back to a quiet 80 mm fan and run it at full speed.

I haven't heard much about Zalman fans, but as a company, they have excellent low noise or noiseless solutions. With a reputation that they have, I doubt it won't be as advertised.

I'm running a silent 1700+ system with an slk-800a w/ 80mm silencer, zalman northbridge, seagate HD, heatsink only vga card, panaflo l1a for exhaust, and a zalman power supply. Can't hear a thing unless you put your ear very close to the case, and the temps stay quite cool - system about 27-29 I believe and cpu well under 40-45C max.

Tempted to replace my 800a - this is a helluva deal.

Wow SVC is amazing. Right when I needed another SK-7 and it was no longer under $20, this deal comes in the nick of time. I spent a total of $30 for one SLK-900A, 1 92mm fan, and 1 tube of AS ceramique. Luckily I am able to pick it up locally.

Also could I overclock if I went down to a Vantec Stealth or Pana 1LA?

It would be about the same, slk900a vs alpha pal, maybe a few degrees. Correct me if I am wrong, but the one advantage with the SLKs is that they can take 92mm fans whereas an alpha pal can't take one directly without an adapter or a mod. I have 2 alpha pals, my 1.8A with a 12dBA Papst fan and my 2.6C with a Panaflo L1A fan, both overclocked of course.

EDIT: I also have a 8045 cooling a 1700+

No. The SLK900U is the original. The SLK947 / SLK900-A are redesigned so they fit on more mobo's. Something that was a problem with the slk900. So Thermalright made new updated versions with one being clip on since many (like me) prefer clip on. Mainly the slk947 / slk900a have more contoured fins than the SLK900U so they are not in the way of capasitors.

I was going to get this hs & fan combo, but Im afraid is too heavy. My system sits right under my desk. I some times knoc it a little with my knees getting in and out of my desk. I have a Coolermaster heat pipe and it's heavy enough as it is. I not sure now, even though I been wanting to get this, for a while. Decissions to make.

Bumping the case shouldnt hurt it, but if you are knocking it over it might be a problem. If it gets hit heavily you might want to go for the SLK947 as its fit is likely a bit better.

Would the combination of 92mm Panaflo M1A and the SLK900A be better and more quiet than my Vantec Aeroflow? And I'm assuming the 92mm Panoflo will mount onto the SLK900A without any trouble?

Excellent heatsink and great price. Just a heads up-I used this heatsink with 80 mm Panaflo L1As on two different Athlon 1.4 systems (this cpu has a well-deserved reputation as a space heater) and the fan just didn't have enough omph to do the job. I switched to generic 80 mm fans I had lying around and its now great.

Maybe the 92 mm does move enough air, I don't know-but the 80 mm didn't.

Also, I would not use this heatsink on a system I planned on moving very much, as its a heavy sob.
