I have never used the Vantec, but they are notorious for rating their fans quieter than they actually are.
I was going to order it, but I don't believe them. I did a test about a year ago when the Vantec's first came out. I compared the Panaflo L1A to the PC Power and Cooling and the Vantec Stealth all at 80 mm. The Vantec was rated at 21 db, the Panaflo about 24 db and the PC Power and Cooling Silencer at 20 db. The Silencer was the quietest fan with the Panaflo coming in second. The Vantec Stealth was definitely the loudest of the three by a considerable margin IMO. I even tested it on a few people for a blind test and the Stealth always came out to be the loudest.
That being said, I went ahead and ordered the Zalman ZM-F2 for $5.99. It's rated at the same 20 db as the Stealth, but at 38 cfm instead of 28 cfm. I figure that I don't need to run a 92 mm fan if I can't get better air flow while getting low noise. My PC Power and Cooling Silencer at 80 mm is rated at 20 db and 28 cfm. Why change if you're getting the same noise and cfm at 92 mm vs a 80 mm fan?
Now.. I know that all noise is not created equal. The larger fans make a lower noise and the smaller ones make a higher pitched noise. I can't see a ton of difference between an 80 and 92 mm fan though. Maybe I'm wrong.. I'll start with this Zalman fan for $6 (shipped with my heat sink) and then go to a different fan if I need to.
One thing is that I'm suprised about the Papst ratings. Usually their fans are super quiet, but their 92 mm is only rated at 23 db. That's kind of loud for a low speed Papst fan IMO. I wonder what the Panaflo L1A or PC Power and Cooling Silencer is rated at for a 92 mm fan? I'll have to check it out.
