I suppose some people are happy with both parents working, with hiring a stranger to raise their children. They think they're lucky to have found a 1200 square foot house that was only eight hundred thousand dollars. They're down right blessed to be able to ride bart to work for fifteen bucks each way and it only takes two hours of sitting in a shit infested train saying no to pan handlers.

I lived here when it was a great place to live. It's not anymore and I morn the passing of that time. It's now a rat race, and the rats are winning. All this area is now is overpopulated. Eight million of us live here now, that's about three million to many. My wife and I will be reducing that number by two. Fun fact. In a recent poll 68% said they would move out of state if they could. Why does two thirds of the population want to leave such a wonderful metropolis?

I guess my confidence was misplaced.

Upstate NY near Albany is nice, we downsized to 1200sf on 2 acres, tax is 6g combined property and school. Bring a 4x4 and a plow

Conservatives rail against CA and NY but conveniently forget about their vast rural areas. Upstate NY is gorgeous, rustic, all a quiet country living person could hope for. Oh, and you need to enjoy winter and snow also

Just going to say there's a sizeable element in this country who believes civilization as we know it ends 100 miles inward from each coast.

I would offer that the cultures found inland vary enough from coastal regions that it certainly can feel that way, especially when you leave urban/suburban areas.

Being the capitol Albany is 150 miles removed from NYC, we get the best of both worlds. Convienent goods and services and good schools at the cost of fairly high taxes. I see people migrating out of Albany for a better quality of life and better schools. It seems this directly contradicts the op. Albany is also becoming a minor tech hub. Also, you don't need to enjoy the snow, you just need to be prepared for it. Nothing for nothing.

Haha, well...when it comes to snow, we can disagree. I'm about 90 miles east of Albany, am prepared for snow, but still want nothing to do with it the older I get

We actually agree, but it's the winter temps that keep the population down so it's a choice. As everything is.

Dude, when they mention Equality they are talking about Equality of Opportunity and Equality under the Law. And no one who is Sane is demanding Equality of Outcome is nothing more then a damn Strawman invent of those who to be Well Privileged over the rest of Society.

Wrong, folks like @Jhhnn prefer to use the word "equity" anyway, which to him basically means let the rich take all the risks and then take away the money they gain for giving to the poors. Their answer to every problem is "it's the fault of the rich, tax them more!" and education is no different. Opioid addict Bubba from the country and 7th grade dropout drug dealer from the ghetto are equally victims of the machinations of the Bill Gates club in his worldview.

As if the ultra wealthy risk their lifestyles, ever. They're diversified world wide & often seek to set themselves above govt entirely. They will, and have, impoverished entire regions of this country to create greater profit which won't enhance their lifestyles at all. They're already saturated. It just gives them power to dictate the lives of others.

Paying hefty income taxes won't hurt them at all.

Please. There aren't any jobs in upstate NY. Capitalism moved on to greener pastures. There are lots of nice out of the way places to live in this country if you can bring your own money.

Well my 29yr old makes six figures in dev so it seems ok to me. Coming from a tradesman and a social worker, I guess he was able to find his bootstraps. Plenty' of jobs, tho maybe not what you're used to. Global Foundry's moved in a few yrs ago, and the trade unions are hanging in there in a recently tougher non union environment

The population of upstate NY has been virtually flat for 30 years. It's getting older, too. Immigrants keep it from declining. The employment base of manufacturing was destroyed in the 80's. It's good to see that there have been some improvements.

Racial equality isn't about academic number games. It's a principle we must live by.

The fact that M introduced it off topic into this discussion indicates he has some axe to grind with that principle.

It's not off-topic. People want to keep flinging money to K-12 when there is overwhelming evidence it doesn't budge the scores. That research article wasn't really about race. It applies to white vs. white, too. Adjust for SES/IQ, and you find the "better" schools are really no better. Shee-it, universities follow the same pattern.

But they don't because money talks. Tech company pay is insane now in the Valley. We'll see what happens in the next recession, but there are some big golden handcuffs on a lot of people now.
