Backing up a DB

I have http://www.mediawiki.org/ and http://wordpress.org/ software hosted on a http://www.e-rice.net/ server. What is the easiest way to download copies of the databases for backup purposes? The dabatase is in mySQL

Do you have cPanel? It will let you download database backups.

Plesk control panel has MySQL menu system that lets you back up, whatever control panel you have might have similar.

It's probably a FAQ or knowledge base article at your hosting company.

All I have is phpMyAdmin. So I can export databases but I don't see how I can import.

MS SQL has commands built into the db engine to back up the database, maybe MySQL has the same?

Export is what you need to download. You would import to restore not backup.

But a backup is a little pointless without a way to restore it

1. Login to phpmyadmin
2. Choose the database
3. Click on 'export', select the table(s) to backup, check 'save to file', and go

--- sometimes later ---

4. Click on 'import'
5. Select the file saved from step 3, and go

At least that's how it looks like from phpmyadmin 2.8.1

For older versions, I think the import can be done from the 'SQL' tab, although i'm not sure ... been a while since the last upgrade..

cPanel has a tool called "Backup" which should be right next to PHPMyAdmin. You can restore there.

EDIT: And PHPMyAdmin has Backup/Import:

For some reason my WordPress has a DB backup plug-in already installed. If you aren't running the latest version of WP, try upgrading and seeing if that will give you the option or if you can download and install the plug-in. That might help with the WP side of things.
