Backing up DVD movies

I'm thinking about buying a DVD burner to back up my movie DVDs onto blank rewritable DVDs. Are there problems with copyright protection on the originals and how do I get around that? Will the newly burned DVDs be able to play on my PC and a stand alone DVD player?

Thanks!

sometimes and DVD Decrypter, yes, yes - though the occasional player might have the occasional dislike to a disk.

DVD Decrypter + DVD Shrink (for cutting anything you dont want and fitting dual-layer film onto single layer disk) + Nero

How long does it take you guys to back up a dvd using DVD Decrypter (and please specify your processor speed)? Or is it as fast as your DVD burner can go? I remember doing backups 5 years ago and it would take ~50 hrs!

I think it was about 20-30mins? last time for a dual layer disk, but it has a habit of starting off saying 40 and then ticking off a minute a second for a while, usually by which time I've gone to watch telly DVDshrink after that is surprisingly quick though (since its going from hdd), like 5-10 mins or something.

probably 2x speed DVD reader, AthXP @ 2140mhz.

Although this is probably late (since I've already backed up all of my DVD's)... What doed DVD Decrypter do that DVD Shrink by itself doesn't do?

dave nailed it, you don't even need nero with the newest version of DVD shrink

wrong..Nero's engine is what Shrink uses..by default.

I use DVD X Copy XPress.

Put the movie in, hit "copy", and wait (Or flip a disk if you dont have 2 DVD drives).

Easy.

So do you need Nero to use Shrink?

Umm, I just backed up 2 movies last week without nero, and no nero was not ever installed, it was on a fresh install with windows xp pro. ripped with dvd decrypter, then used shrink to create the iso, then burned the iso with dvd decrypter. I rip with dvd decrypter because the quality seems better to me.

DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 > DVD Decrypter ; DVD X Copy.

Used to backup a DVD with 3 programs - DVD Decrypter 3.2.2.0, DVD Shrink 1.03, then Nero 6.3 to burn the DVD. Before that used DVD X Copy. Then I finally figured how to use the latest DVD Shrink version. Backed up a DVD, with menu & special features, all with this one program.

I use a Lite-On 815S with the Booktype 1.06 program and DVD+R media. With this utility I can assure myself that the copy will play in any DVD player.

DVD Shrink (which uses Nero's engine - if you have Nero - i believe) = awesomeness
