Personally, I would stay away from the Seagate desktop external drives. I accidentally bought one (I thought I was ordering a Seagate Portable HDD, which I DO like...) but decided to just use it instead of sending it back. That thing ran hot as... well... you know where. Between 45-50C idle and light writes. Benchmarks took it to 55C+. I took the drive out and just installed it (it's a Barracuda, after all...) and it's happy as a clam idling at 30F... so it wasn't the drive. I installed one of my Hitachi drives in the external case... and it idled at 50C as well.
I have 4 Seagate USB-powered portable HDDs running right now... them things are fabulous!
