i wanna backup my wii games because the dog eats shiny things and a 120lb german that has police training cannot be bothered by little old 230lb 6'2 me haha. this dog is f'n strong hahaha

well if i softmodded it for my own purposes would i be bricked or banned? i searched and googled it but there are sooo many controversial posts. but no clear cut legit info out there that i can find.

Anyone know for sure or have legit documents? thanks alot in advanced guys

i know hahahah, sad illegal or legal. its my wii and i can do whatever i want to it. i own it. so therefore i assume responsibility for what happens if it gets banned. im asking if it will get banned. simple. not asking for hacks or how to do it. just backing up my stuff. simple

put your wii in a higher place, dont leave discs out, when you change discs dont show the shiny part towards him

the obvious seems to move the wii to a higher spot or in a cabinet. Theres not much to say other than modding is illegal. As for bans i havent heard of wii really banning but they also dont have many (to my knowledge) online games anyways.

I have always wondered why Sony/microsoft/wii couldnt build in a device to allow burning of backups that are only for that one system. burn in a key or something that makes the disc unique to one system or to one user account. but o well wishfully thinking

You won't be banned or anything. There's a chance a later Wii system update will mess up your system though. That's the only thing to worry about.

How would that work? You could still borrow your friends' games to back up for yourself, or just rent the games. There's so many things wrong with that idea that I don't see why you have 'always wondered' about it.

They could just go the cd-key route like PC games did years ago.

But then you'd have the same influx of CD-key generators like in those days. I agree that it'd be great to have SOME kind of system to backup your games, but there's no easy way to allow such a thing without it being exploited.

Theres not much to say other than modding is illegal.
In most of the world it is legal. And even where it is illegal (I'm guessing it is in NY since that's the original poster's location and you said it is illegal), I'd say the relevant concerns are 1) is it wrong, 2) will I get caught doing it, 3) what are the consequences for getting caught.

Way too many people - note: you did not say this and I'm not pinning this on you - engage in circular thinking such as "it's wrong because it's illegal and it's illegal because it's wrong", which doesn't exactly withstand scrutiny.

I'm happy to own a modded PS2 which has allowed me to enjoy superior games from other regions. No one has lost anything from that mod. To the contrary, it has given devs and retailers about 300 euros worth of business they'd never have gotten if my hardware couldn't run those games.

And back on topic. Do any Wii mods crack the region lock? The console has relatively few localized games I'm interested in, but having access to Japanese releases would make the console a lot more tempting. I got no dog so I'm not interested in backups.

In other words, DO NOT UPDATE your Wii if you want to keep it alive and healthy after the modding process

ive softmodded mine. just dont update the console. I also have a 320 gb hard drive attached with my backed up games on it so I never have to take the originals out of their cases anymore. Just like the original unmodded wii though, it was great for a few weeks, but now is boring.

You can be certain, but you'd also be wrong.

As much as I hate to encourage the business practice, it actually sounds like you're a good candidate for the typical replacement warranty that some stores are pushing nowadays on software (probably intended for careless CD-handling kids). For a few bucks extra, you get a replacement disc from the merchant when your dog goes on a bender.

Yes modding is legal (for now) BACKING up the software IS NOT.

Also if wii updates then there is a good chance it will brick the system. no they will no replace it.

oh and keep the wii up out of reach of the dog. but we all know thats not why you want to modd it.

Does this defeat regioning?

Actually, making backups of paid-for software is completely legitimate and legal (EULA be damned). Piracy is not.

Awesome reasoning. I own my car. I want to mod it with a huge dent so I plan to smash it into a building. Should be perfectly legal since I own the car and "assssssume the rights of the item to its fullest".

i dont know. all my discs were purchased in the USA. I can check though by asking a few friends.

EDIT.. After asking another guy who modded his the same way, he says yes.. region locking is gone and you can play discs from anywhere.
