I've got a hard drive with WINXP set up just how I like it (2.7GB worth). How can I back it up to a dvd-r so if I ever have any trouble I can go back to this backup drive. I just want to have a good starting point insyead of reinstalling every time

thanks for your time

NTBACKUP (and every other backup application I've seen that's commercial) only supports backup to tape media and disk, not cd optical.

On top of that, a full 2.7 GB backup wouldn't fit on a CD. I would recommend backing up the non-OS data that you want to keep to file, then burn that to CD. If anything happens, you can reinstall the OS (something you have to do anyway) and then restore the backup.

Symantec Ghost can natively burn an image to a CD-R/DVD-R. It can also split the image over several discs if it doesn't fit.

Why not make an image and burn it to the DVD? I'm almost positive Ghost can save an image to DVD natively.

Edit: Just like Gholam said

just used the backitup feature of nero and it backed up the entire boot drive in windows right to dvd. I even tried to restore it and it worked great.
Problem solved!!

Did you have to use Norton Ghost before doing so?

nero Backitup doesn't require Ghost and can backup files and partitions to cd/dvd.

Yeah, me neither! That's pretty useful, although will it backup a partition that is in use- i.e. Windows?

Never knew nero could do this either. Where is this option in nero? I'm at work now but when I get home I'd like to give this a try.
ANd like Dopefiend said, will it backup my C drive when windows is running?

thanks

I don't think Nero will be able to backup files that are in use and certain system files. Never tried doing my whole machine but I know Nero had problems burning MP3s to a CD while I still ahd them playing. I assume the same principle would apply when backing up the whole machine.

To whomever it was that backed up their machine with Nero. Have you tried to restore from that yet?
