Does anyone have ideas on how to search for a laptop with a backlit keyboard?

Alienware are too spendy and over-priced (but definitely have the coolest keyboard.)

ASUS is out because I HATE my G71G.

Thanks in advance!

That is standard on most Macbook Pros.

Sounds like you want a gaming laptop. Just look for one you like and it'll probably have backlit keyboard. If not, post what you like and we'll give you suggestions that are similar.

Why the Asus? I bought my GF a G53 for Christmas and I've been using it, I love the backlit keyboard on it.

The best backlighting I've seen has been on the MacBook Pro. The only thing that'd make it better would be to invert the color scheme: black symbols with white keys. This would make it easier to see the keys in low-light conditions so that you have more chances to not use the backlighting and save your battery. Even though it's just low powered, pulsed LED's, you'd be surprised just how much battery life you can save by not running the backlight.

To be honest, if it's a good keyboard layout and quality and you're a decent typist, you don't need the backlight for gaming, if that's your concern.

If you want a gaming laptop, stay away from Mac. Don't be fooled by the fanboys - Macs DON'T perform well in Windows. You're always at the mercy of Apple's drivers, which are always subpar.

Edit: forgot to mention that my experience with Dell and Alienware keyboards is that their layouts are fantastic, but the mechanical feeling of the keyboard is flimsy and cheap. Still, I've never broken one - they just seem a little cheap.

Too much work lately!! Sorry for the delay...

@zuffy - too many laptops I like, and finding whether or not the keyboard is backlit seems unnecessarily difficult.

@corkyg - It's in the running but as slugg said - I know too many people with driver issues in games.

@ActiveX - Thanks, I'll take a look!

@ther00kie16 - Yeah, I'm looking for a portable gaming laptop. Something a step or two down from the beast that is the M14 Alienware.

@alent1234 - MBP huh? I'll take a look. The XPS is probably #1 in my book now. I've heard horror stories about HP reliability.

@lsv - Mine has been sent to CA from NC over 10 times, not to mention two RMAs and STILL having issues 3 years later.

@slugg - My typing skills are average at best and I've found myself on numerous occasions wishing I had a backlit keyboard.

Quite a bit too look at and think about... thanks all

bought my wife a MBP and the backlighting is nice. if you don't want to spend $2000 at once get a 13" at 0% interest. pay it off, sell it and buy the 15" from best buy at 18 months 0% interest.

Say what you will about Dell's tech support, but in the end of the day, they've served me way better than Apple has. Sure, you get routed 3 times and spend half an hour in the phone, but your warranty claims get fulfilled with reasonable terms. As a computer enthusiast that prefers to work on his own machine rather than sending it off and having downtime, this is very valuable. In the past, Dell has offered to send a prepaid box to ship the machine to them. I explained that I can't afford any down time and prefer to just swap parts out myself. They complied - they've sent me boxes of parts that are prepaid to send the defected parts back. I've done it with memory, batteries, optical drives, and even main boards!

This has a lot of value, in my opinion. Sure, their tech support sucks if you're the average consumer, but if you know what you're doing, it's stellar. Diagnose the problem, get a replacement part, and pleasure doing business. No bullshitting around with setting a stupid appointment at a "genius" bar so that they can take your laptop for 5 days to do what would take you 20 minutes. Dell's warranty terms are also very liberal - everything is covered, including changing out your own parts, as long as there isn't any abuse or installation error. Awesome.

So think about that when you decide what to buy.

Doesn't Dell cater to the "General Public"? They should create a better CS environment for that segment in my opinion.

What is your dollar figure? If you can swing it, look at the Panasonic Toughbook line. They are all pretty much backlit standard on some and an option of 3 different keyboard types for all. They are also black keys with white letters and 5 brightness settings.

Pretty sure the OP is looking for a gaming machine...

OP: spec out a Dell, Alienware, or Asus. Buy the one you like best - you can't go wrong with any mid to high end laptop of these brands.

Thanks again all...

Dell or Alienware will be my focus.

I might even resurrect this when I decide and buy

As of right now, it's looking like either an

Alienware m14x
or
XPS 15

Still thinking, building, and thinking some more

Actually, one of my requirments for my new laptop is a backlit keyboard...I do a lot of work in the dark, (it's a long story ;-), so a backlit keyboard is a must!

I'm also looking for a NON CHICLET keyboard to boot...so far, no luck ! :-(
But for doing a basic search for a Backlit keyboard, I've been using the Best Buy.com site, as they have that as one of their search options.
Sony, Dell, Asus, etc. all have a backlit keyboard
Hope you have better luck than I'm having!

i love my M14X
That's a good sign! Did you have a 17" laptop prior by chance?

Now, I'm back to deciding between
M14x (don't like the 900p)
M17x (don't like the size)

XPS 15 (don't like the looks)
XPS 17 (don't like the looks or the size)

So alas, I keep reading...

I went from a M18X to this as far as laptops go.

I had 6990m Crossfire before, sold it to go smaller.

Bought a Clevo, screen was dead, sent it back.

Now have this.

Wow! From an 18" to a 14" and you are happy with the screen real estate? And the smaller size?

Rookie:

I can't stress this enough... GO FOR THE HIGHER SCREEN RESOLUTION. You'll thank yourself in the long run. Function over form. Sure, the XPS 15 doesn't look as cool, but it looks better than most laptops out there! 1080p on a 15 inch is the perfect resolution and dot pitch. Do it.

I have an older XPS-16, and I love it for laptop stuff, especially since I swapped out the HDD for an SSD....
