Does anyone know anything about backpacking in Europe in the winter? What is the weather like? Is it cold and rains a lot? Where can I get information on this? I have never backpacked before, so I don't know what to bring, what to expect, etc. Please give me good sources to check out. Thanks!

Btw, I'll be posting more questions as they come to me. Thanks again!

maybem before you drop all that money to go overseas and try it in a foriegn place, you ought to try it out somewhere close to home first. Just might be a good idea to see if you even like it first. As for resources, check out backpacker magazine. I think they might actually have done a european issue a little while back.

Yes, it is cold, but if you are travelling in continental Europe (excluding Irland & UK), it doesn't rain that much, and the cold is not unbearable. Just dress warmly. Winter is actually not a bad time to travel in Europe in that there aren't that many tourists to crowd every place. Accommodation is cheaper too.

For destination info, you can go to Lonely Planet, they don't have a lot of info there but there's a very good forum, a lot of Europeans there who are ready to help, they sometimes can be a little bit cynical to US travelers, but most of the time they are very nice, just try to be as polite as you can.

For accommodation, if you are planning to stay in hostels, here's a website that can help Europe Trip .

call me whatever you want, but from what i hear, i really don't think that it is a safe time to go backpacking. The hatred that is in Europe right now towards America is amazing, we over here in the States don't hear anything about it. In France it is horrible, the way they stick their noses up and spit on Americans. I backpacked across Europe last year and only regretted a couple of things, going to France (nothing to see there) and not spending enough time in Italy. Also, since the intro of the Euro, it has gotten to be so expensive there as well.

If you go in the right time, try making it to Greece. Some of the islands close shop for the winter time for about three - five months, and it is a ghost town, but it is damn nice.

Also, don't forget about AmsterDAMN. They got some nice stuffff over there.

I've been to Europe in the summer and in the winter. Your experience will definitely be better in the summer.

Juan (and Kuk) --

I went to Europe this past January, although for only 3 weeks. Saw England, Brussels, Netherlands, Germany, France, and Ireland -- all pretty briefly, obviously. The only *really* cold place I went to was Berlin -- everywhere else I went was pretty moderate (although Ireland rained every day, of course, which made it seem much colder, being damp all the time).

I have to disagree with some people about France. I went there expecting the worst, and was very pleasantly surprised. Paris was the most amazing city I saw, and the people were very friendly, overall. I think was for two reasons, mainly: (1) I made attempts (however pathetic) to speak basic French when I interacted with people, rather than assuming they knew basic English, and (2) there were not many tourists around in January. I have read that in the summer months Paris is so overwhelmed with tourists, that it's like they run the city. I could understand how anyone might be upset by this -- but obviously, it has contributed to Americans' view of the French, and vice versa.
Basically, just don't act like an ignorant, arrogant American, and you will be treated respectfully in return, for the most part.

Although some more 'serious' backpackers would deride it, I highly suggest the "Let's Go Europe" book -- it has great, basic information about all of the countries, and hostel listings as well. The Eurorail offices in any major city can help you plan your travels and find the most appropriate train ticket.

So anyways, pack some warm clothes, but I wouldn't worry about the cold too much, unless you're going way north. Besides, the weight of the backpack, and walking around all day will keep you somewhat warm. I remember sweating profusely in the snow one day in Berlin.

Good luck, enjoy, and email me if you have any further questions that I might be able to answer!

P.S. --

Two things I forgot to address:

Two of the benefits of going in the winter are cheaper airfare (I flew roundtrip Newark-Heathrow for $240), and more vacancies in hostels (I didn't ever run into a full hostel, whereas I've heard they can be packed in the more popular places in the summer. Of course, this also means less people to meet up with, and hang out with.)

As far as safety, the only city I didn't feel safe in, walking around by myself at night (typically drunk) was Amsterdamn. Watch out for the agressive (they follow you) drug dealers and homeless. Every other city I felt perfectly safe (maybe mistakenly, but didn't run into any trouble ).
