I recently built a legacy box for Windows 98 (for a few select old games).

Does anyone now of any currently available software (free or paid) that is compatible with Windows 98 that I can use to make an image/backup (similar to Ghost or Acronis True Image)?...thanks.

Thanks lxskllr...I was unfamiliar with Clonezilla.

One question though-----> it seems that using Clonezilla you cannot restore an image to a smaller disc (known limitation), however, what I am not clear on is can I "image" the primary disc (40 gb, with ~ 7 gigs of data) to a smaller disc (20gb)?

The smaller disc is what I would be using for storing the image and restoring to the primary (40gb) disc as needed.

Again, thanks for any insight.

The MFG drive copy programs have helped me greatly in the past recloning 98 and NT on our POS systems, You just have to get the one for the MFG of the drive your going to.

The only issue with the MFG Drive copy programs is that they allow only a copy of a drive to a drive and not to an image.

While I have never used it, you could look at Macrium Reflect Free.

What you may have to do is make a bootable cd to make the images unless you have an old copy of ghost or acronis, as nothing current will run under win98 but most bootable cd versions don't care what os is on the drive

I haven't done it personally, but you should be able to save an image to a smaller drive, but to restore it, you need a drive at least as big as the one it was imaged from.

Edit:
PartedMagic is a nice set of tools for disk manipulation, and rescue. It includes Clonezilla. Here's the site...

He wants you to pay for the software now. It really is worth the cost, but I don't care for the tactic he uses; not giving a free download link. Here's a magnet link for 2013_08_01...

Give it a try, and if you like what you see, consider giving the dev some money. It really is a great set of tools, and $5 is a bargain for the functionality you get.

Thanks for the linkage -- however, unless I missed something it doesn't appear to support Win 98.
any new software won't support win98.

however, you don't need win98 compatibility when you are booting off the cd and imaging the drive, as it supports all disk filing systems.

Ok, thanks...I'll give it a go - and I do see that it supports FAT32, so maybe it will work.

Yes, I have been following that project with interest. However, at the end of the day I thought it would just be easier to build a legacy box as I had so many old parts available including an ATI 850XT PE AGP card --kind of hard to find (with an AGP interface). Fastest video card supported under Windows with an AGP format (PCIe then quickly took over).

I know you built a legacy box, but have you looked at dosbox? http://www.dosbox.com/
