On Windows, I had truecrypt encrypted external hard drives and I used robocopy to sync file systems from local fixed storage to such drives.
I migrated to Lubuntu a few months ago and backups are still a sticking point. I'd like to do things as similarly as possible as before (using veracrypt on Linux), and I thought that rsync was the nearest equivalent to robocopy on Linux. However, where copying files through the UI or through CP works perfectly fine (both CPU and disk throughput), rsync is completely tanking: ~35MB/sec at best and a constant CPU core saturation (i5-4690k), whereas cp/UI are managing to copy at speeds that the drive is capable of (~100-150MB/sec, far less CPU usage).
Maybe rsync isn't the most appropriate tool for this job, I don't know.
