I got a few moments to put the new guts of the rig together.

Replaced the mobo with an Asus P5q pro. The new cpu is an e8400. The power supply was also upgraded to a more stout 550 watts (and atx 2.0 compliant).
The ram is being reused (G.Skill ddr2-800. It's one of the "approved" brand/models for this board according to the manual).
Vid card is an el cheapo ati pci-express vid card that I know works.

On first power up I got no beep/post or a signal to the monitor.

I removed the ram (checked the clear bios jumper too). I got the 1 long and 2 short tones.
It's getting past the cpu, so that's good.

I used the ram in single sticks in varying dimm slots and tried the other stick as well. No beep/post.

I removed the vid card and got no error code at all which suprised me a bit. I thought for sure that would have prompted a tone.
I tried it in both slots as well and got no results.

I guess it's RMA time, unless someone else has an idea?

Is the E8400 an E0?

If so, you might need to update the BIOS (and not using AsusUpdate!) because the original BIOS from May or June does not have E0 support.

Yes, it's a E0...BUT I can't update it if I can't even get the thing to post.

Try your old power supply? I also had a no post situation with a new board recently due to a modded cpu. It worked fine in older chipsets, but not a p45. Also try a bare post outside of the case with just the cpu/heatsink, one stick of memory, and video on a phonebook.

I just got this Newegg combo yesterday as well. My E8400 is E0 stepping, and it worked just fine in my P5Q pro board without a bios update.

The strange thing is that after setting everything up, it took a few hits of the power button before finally powering on. It's been running fine ever since.

I sent it off for RMA. I took the boad out of the case and set it on cardboard. It still would not post.
I just think I got a bum board.

Oh well.
