Bad Athlon 64? Opinions Please

Recently I thought I'd join the 64-bit Athlon crowd with a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and a EPoX EP-8KDA3J. Everything worked for a day then the CPU apparently went bad.

The mobo would boot, fans would spin, the EPox LED display would say "FF", no video, no POST beeps, nada. OK, I got a replacement CPU under warranty. Imagine my delight to put everything back together and be cruising again. Well, the new CPU does the same thing.

A quick trip to my local computer shop and I brought home a brand new MSI K8N Neo Platinum in order to eliminate the mobo as a cause of my trouble. The MSI boots, no beeps, the MSI nVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT video card's cooling fan spins up, then stops, then the whole machine powers down. Wonderful. I then try another case with a totally different power supply. Same problem.

Other parts I have tried:

Antec SL350 350W power supply
Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply
Samsung DDR RAM
Centron DDR RAM
Rage AGP video card
MSI Ti-4200 AGP video card

My guess here is that I have another bad CPU. Opinions?

*Note: Other hardware is currently in use by my P4 Asus P4P800 Deluxe which I'm using now to type this message. In other words, everything works with another mobo.

no insult intended but r u sure that the cpu hsf and all other hw is properly mounted
this is about the strangest thing i have ever heard of the swaps you made should have narrowed the search down but didnt
what i would do
1,reset the cmos
2, if that doesnt do it i would rma the board and cpu and if you bought it localy make the shop mount and post the new combo for you to see it works
could be just realy bad luck and you keep getting funky hw
might be a sign

In case anyone is interested, it was a bad CPU. I went to the store and bought another AMD 64 3000+ and put it in the MSI mobo - it fired right up and I am using it now

Glad you have things worked out, but you don't want to go sticking an old ATi rage card in a new board or bad things can happen, bad things....
