Bad Craigslist Deal - How Should I Handle?

Okay, so I have had a bit of a bad craigslist deal, how should I handle it?

I purchased an iphone 6s plus on craigslist and I didn't like it so I ended up selling an iphone 6s plus and subsequently buying a surface pro 3 they had on sale which the person claims was bought in June.

When I took the surface home I noticed a yellow line on the surface screen, asked for a receipt as I figured if I had it I could get it swapped but the person never responded and it's been two months.

Now the person is telling me the iphone i swapped them has been blacklisted. I was going to just give them a refund for it, but I also asked about the receipt for the surface pro 3, and they tell me "it's as is".

I feel as I sold the iphone I should give them a refund and take it back as I never thought it would be blacklisted, but the way they respond about the surface kind of pisses me off. Thoughts?

Craigslist should only be used for apartments and hookers. Anything else and you are asking for trouble.

eBay should not be used for anything.

LOL - Craigslist purchases are 'as is'. Nothing more, nothing less. If you didn't check out the purchase before you paid for it, then it is your fault.

Sounds like your SOL unfortunately.

And I think the guy you sold the phone to is in the same boat.

I'm with him on Craigslist...

I make a point to add "no warranty" or "sold as-is" with everything I put on Craigslist. This covers my ass in case of trouble. To be honest, I'm good for all of it and would refund if people tell me something's busted. I'm also cynical enough to believe no one else would reciprocate so I never buy off Craigslist.

eBay should not be used for anything.

I bought and sold several items on eBay this year without any problems. At least a dozen auctions and all went well. Buying and selling anywhere can be a problem if you aren't smart about it, but I feel eBay gets a bad rap sometimes.

Not that it matters much, but did you trade your Iphone 6S+ for a Surface Pro 3?

or did you sell the IP6S+ to someone, and then later bought the SP3 from another person?

Can't really tell one way or another from your post.

Did kind of a trade + cash thing.

Worked out what the iphone was worth and what the surface was worth. I contacted the person when the deal originally happened the person claimed he just bought the surface, but I asked if he could send a copy of the receipt, and I was just ignored. Then they tell me the iphone is blacklisted, I was going to take it back, but again I asked today if there's a receipt for the surface and they said "it's as-is", and and asked me "when can I take back the iphone or replace it?"

I was going to give a refund for the phone, but just the way all of a sudden the surface is "as-is", and won't even provide me a receipt pisses me off.

Sorry you got screwed twice, it sucks people can be so crappy. Did you make sure to write down the SN on the phone before you sold it? If not, there is no way you can know if you're getting back your phone. If you have the SN, I would try to setup refund where they give you back the phone and you give back the SP3 plus any cash that is owed. If the person wont do that, then there's not much you can do to force the person to do what's fair.

I gave up on CL a while back when I got tired of the flakes, scams, spam, and being SOL if a deal goes south. I've tried apps like 5Miles, at least there is some kind of rating system to help weed out the sketchy users. Sadly I've just come to learn that for every awesome person on a buy/sell platform there are 100s of bridge trolls.

FaceBook groups are no better. The comment sections bring out the worst, including:

-People trolling your post with claims of it being "overpriced"
-"Experts" chiming in on the quality of your item
-People asking questions that have already been addressed in the post, which starts...
-People name calling each other in the comment sections for petty reasons

So, yeah... People suck, and I'm donating everything I don't need to Good Will.

Meh, at this point ignore him back and move on.

He claims your iphone is blacklisted.

His surface pro 3 has a yellow line (though how could you not test it out first before you traded?).

I should have tested out the surface a bit more, but I didn't actually even notice it until that evening and now I notice how prominent it is. I was of course ignored initially when I asked about if he had a receipt so I could tell microsoft to extend the warranty as he claimed he just bought it.

You should still call up a MS rep or go to their store to see what they can do. They might be able to help you out by looking up the SN of the SP3 to see if it's still covered.

It's not, I checked. He sold it not too long after the warranty expired.

Tell them to undo the whole deal and swap back, or the iphone is "as is" also.

Just make sure you get your phone back if you undo the swap.

and furniture and other...services.

But never electronics. never.

I think fully 50% of the time I bought electronics on Craigslist it was people trying to rip me off. One time I was buying an iPad 3 from a guy but it was actually an iPad 2 with the whole screen covered in Scotch tape so you couldn't tell whether it had a retina display.

Oh No! I hope you don't get a negative Cragslist rating....

Tell them to fuck off.

How could the phone be black listed? You were the previous owner and it worked, then you sold it and the buyer is telling you the phone is black listed?

This is the weird part to me as well. It could be that the iPhone needs to be released (through iTunes) by the previous owner, but being blacklisted is something completely different.

In this case, I suppose it's working well for the OP... and why it's not obvious that this trade should simply be reversed (or both parties could simply walk away unhappy) is beyond me.

BTW, I meet CL folks at a public place that's not my home, and I use a burner phone number for all my dealings. I've had lot of people flake before the deal takes place, but I've never had a CL deal go "bad".

Maybe it's one of those things where OP needed to sign out of find my iphone or something. I don't know the exact details but doesn't that screw up resetting or something if you don't sign out?

Or could the phone be black listed on one network but not another? Black listed on AT&T but not on T-mobile.

Very confusing posts.

Did you buy the Surface Pro 3 from the same guy you bought the iPhone 6s Plus from? Did he buy the iP6sP back (or trade for the SP3)? Or, was it a different person who bought the iPhone, then you used the money from the iPhone sale to buy the Surface Pro 3 from a different person?

Actually, it doesn't matter. Just tell everybody involved to fuck off, everything is always "As-Is" on Craigslist.
