How bad would the econ have to be b4 eating cats/dogs/squirrels no longer becomes shocking?

or does the US have a good enuf safety net to prevent this?

I don't think that the US economy ever got THAT bad. Even during the depression in the 30's, you could still get food from bread lines and soup kitchens.

A lot more than the ecomony would have to go south before no one would complain, and even then there will be some people who would rather die than eat pet animals... Those people are beyond me. I think that if it came down to absolute survival of the human race, it would happen.

Seriously, though, there's no chance of this happening. We're nowhere near as screwed as we were during the 70s' malaise, and nobody ate cats then either. In fact, nobody even ate them during the sad and desperate days of World War II; the Third Reich listed cats as inferior to every other potential source of food - including grubs and rats.

During my travels in Asia, I learned a great many recipes for cooking cats and dogs. There was an old couple living in a small village near the Mongolian border that showed me a particularly interesting way of preparing the meat for cooking. As you all know meat must be tenderized before cooking. Well it turns out that if you tenderize the meat while the animal is still alive, it actually makes the meat much much softer. I suspect it has something to do with the additional blood that gets forced into the muscles as the animal is beaten to death, but I'm no cook so I could be wrong. Anyhow, I've yet to perfect my technique. That old man sure did have a way with those animals. I hope one day I'll be as good as him.

The "trap" is equating the needs of that family with those here on this side of the globe.
While fundamentally equal, ( food / Shelter / Security / Family) HOW they are manifested can be so different as to be unrecognizable.
The manner in which that man provides for his family is dictated by his culture, as is mine.

That's the problem I have with asia / china. They have ZERO sense of life/feelings. I've heard this before they do this so it's not news to me, but it's still horrible to be reminded of what goes on there.

I think they do it more for the thrill. It's like kids that microwave cats or feed rice to seaguls (makes they stomac explode). You really have to have screws loose to enjoy doing something so horrible to any living being.
