Bad hard drive circuit board

From my understanding you need a controller (board) from an identical hard drive where almost every value besides date and s/n match up.

^ Yep it has to be 100% identical.

Someone had the same problem and the newer board has one chip different then the other and it was a no go.

Check the fuses and overvoltage protectors. The latter are surge protectors that short to block excessive voltages, causing the fuses to blow in the process.

The whole "just move the circuit board it will work" is a very old solution.

maybe 1 in 100 *might* work, but thats not likely.


on modern drives (made 2002 and later) there is adaptive data stored on the PCB that is like a fingerprint for the drive. It's function can be considered similar to a BIOS for the HDD.

Seagates will have an external ROM chip, 8 legged.

It needs to be de-soldered and re-soldered to the new board.

You already have a matching board, you HAVE to transfer the ROM.


It doesn't work like the old days unfortunately.
