Bad Linux Experience

Just my little FYI:

I used Gentoo for over a year and it was a great learning experience. I then got away from Linux after buying a Mac and everything just works. I recently tried Ubuntu 6.06 on my son's PC and was quite impressed. I then was reading good things about Suse 10.1 and was tempted to give it a try. Here's what I found...

1. Install requires 3 CD's instead of only 1 as in Ubuntu,
2. Their package manager (YasT) is broken ---> dependancy resolution failed,
3. Continuos hard drive activity and Gnome seemed laggy.

I guess OSX has spoiled me.

1. Download the single ISO for DVD, if you have dvd burning capabilities. Suse has always been feature rich, so I'm sure its hard to squeeze it all on one CD.

2. You need to run the online update. I experienced the dependancy resolution issue as well, until after I updated it. I believe this is a known issue.

Yeah, 10.1 is broken and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Releases shouldn't come out with broken updaters, that's ridiculous.

Gnome is just slow, I avoid those desktop environments whenever possible.

Here in lies the rub... You can't do an online update because it's broken. You have to search the support forums, find the fixed files and manually install them. My point is that for a newb, coming from Windows, their first experience, right out of the gate would be to hack and patch.

Wouldn't be a very good impression for someone wanting to ditch Windows.. I definately agree there..

Feature-rich, or just includes more packages on the cds? I've always much preferred distros that can pack it into one cd and then you can use your package manager to get new stuff after install. Most of it is usually due for an update right away anyway, so the cds go to waste.

If that's too much work, then he shouldn't be using Linux.

True, SUSE 10.1 is quite a bad case. My software install broke and I just decided to use Ubuntu instead. Even though (IMO) I'm well-rounded with Linux, it still left a bad taste in my mouth. That was at a time when SUSE 10.1 was just released and there were no updates, and I was among the first to come upon a problem. Shouldn't SUSE update their ISO to include the fix???

They should have shipped a working product.

I agree, Linux is about what you CAN do, not about what you HAVE to do. I think that I've gotten to the point where I prefer the Linux CLI to windows, it just makes sense to me, but I digress. BTW, good choice on starting with Gentoo. When I was starting with Linux a friend of mine forced me to go with Gentoo because you pretty much have to pay attention to how things work. I thinkt that I've got a much better understanding of what goes on now than I may have had otherwise!

Thanks all for your pipes. I still believe Linux has a future mainly because no one can own it. This, to me, is the appeal.

Your not the only person to run into that Yast problem. And the slow Gnome problem.

I think it's mostly teething problems to do with the new community release. I expect the next one will be much better.

If you want to try Suse out try their official stuff. I don't know if it's aviable at no-cost, but the license for their 'enterprise desktop' version is 50 bucks.

maybe one of the solutions to your problems would be in here:

I like SuSE 10.0 and 10.1. But Fedora Core 5 ...that is different story. IMO FC5 has way more initial issues.
I just ran Yast2 few hours ago, it seems to work

Suse 10.1 works fine with me. Only issue was just the broken libzyyp with updating. But all you have to do is run the online update.

I've had no issues at all with hard drive activity or Gnome being sluggish, but at least Suse could detect my sata hard drive unlike Ubuntu. Instead of Suse 10.1, you should've tried SLED 10.

I just installed their server OS here at work. I was impressed by it. I was thinking about sticking the free version on a pc at home. Now I'm thinking I'll just stick with debian/ubuntu/gentoo.

I think you just select to only update Yast Online update at first..
and then, the dependancy resolution crap should work right after that..

don't quote me on that though.. I'm just pulling that from my @$$

I don't waste my time on RPM based distros anymore. Long live apt and portage.

You use YOU to fix it. link

Or you can just use the rpm command to update libzypp.

Or use another package manager like Smart.

I think I ended up installing smart and used it instead of the official stuff. But I'm looking for the quick "click this" gui fix where I don't have to read anything but the propmpts on the screen, and I don't have to download anything except through said gui.

You didn't use Smart's gui? Guru's smart builds already come with a lot of repositories so all you have to do is click on update then upgrade once you've installed it.

I didn't know smart has a gui. My point is I shouldn't have had to use smart in the first place, and it's a sign of major team problems if something so basic is broken.

And the only repositories I would want would be the official suse repos.

You don't have too. During the installation of Suse 10.1 it tries to configure the online update and even tries to update there. If you would've done that then there would be no problem.

Or you could've afterwards gone to Yast's Online Update Configuration and then Online Update.
