Bad news - The Crack Rack is going down

I got the word today that we are going to need the full bandwidth going to our office due to some changes so the rack is going to have to go down I am not sure right now if I am going to be able to find another place to put it or if I am going to have to sell it. If I sell the parts I will give TeAm members first crack.

Sorry guys, but I don't have a place at the house for it and now with the changes at work it looks like 9 XP 1800 nodes are going to be down indefinitely

Any chance of setting up a queue on one of them...and shuttleing the WU's back and forth from home? Heck, someone donate that man a network switch! :Q

I have a switch, the problem is I don't have the time currently at work to shuttle WUs back and forth Due to changes I cannot have any "extra" items using the bandwidth. I can't complain because I have been able to house it there for awhile. If I have to sell I will sell to teammates and I will make the deal appealing.

i dunno if this is possible, but can you burn uncompleted WU's to a CDr & then burn the completed WU's for submission from home ? just a thought.

what kind of equipment are in the racks ?

JoinT,

That is what I did when I couldn't flush from work. I would burn a CD-RW with about 2 weeks worth of WU's (move them from the Queue and then burn them)....copy them to the Queue folder at work and then use a floppy to take home the results. This took about 20 minutes total every two weeks!

I hope you can work it out Crazee!

The rack is comprised of motherboards, CPUs, power supplies and hard drives. I appreciate everyone trying to come up with ideas, but due to the distance I live from work and the promise I made not to use work time to maintain and monitor the rack it is not going to work there. Unfortunately I don't have a place at the house right at the moment where I can put it and I am already running 5 PCs at home. I am going to try to think of some other place for it, but right now it doesn't look too good.

Well hopefully you can find some way to salvage them. If you do indeed sell them I'm sure we'll all be fighting to get inline...so with that I call dibs (not all on all of them, just 8 - I'll share
J/K)

Sorry about the news Crazee.

A job is number one but it sure sounds like they are turning screws in the wrong way and place. Good luck.

Any TeAmmates in TX? The load could be evenly "Distributed" and the fleet continues on.

Dave,

No one is turning the screws I made that promise when I first put up the rack that I wouldn't use work hours to maintain it that any work that needed to be done would be after hours. I live 45 minutes from work so if I have to stay any long periods of time to work on it then it puts me back really late. I really can't complain as I have been able to run it for awhile without a problem.

Sorry to hear that Crazee.

Hey, maybe someone would be willing to host it for you, sort of like we are doing with the ENTERPRISE crack rack.

Can anyone out there help a teammate in need?

Sorry to hear that Crazee.

Could you set up as SetiQueue that only talked to the outside world during maintance times?
Like 1am to 1:30am?

However, if the plug is already pulled I don't want to get you into any more trouble.

One last thought Crazee. I have the same issues at my work.

Ok to run Seti on a few machines but I am not able to take up bandwidth to the internet.

Solution: I have a Pentium 75 with a queue on it under my desk that the machines use. The Queue then reports to a queue on a laptop that I bring in.
Then when I get home the laptop queue reports to my home queue. whew that is a lot of queues.

Works great!

Sorry to hear this Will... Hopefully you can find a local host or a workaround. I know you don't want to lose that production and you know none of us want to see it either.

Sorry to hear about your networking.

Could you run ECCP by sneakernet instead? It takes no downloads, and very little uploading.

I would suggest ECCp as something that the rack could do. You only need to gather the dplist files maybe once every 2-4 weeks. It won't be fun waiting for stats though...

Sorry to hear that, Crazee But really, does Seti on those things really use that much bandwidth!? And is that bandwidth REALLY going to be used 24/7?

Just seems like a bit of a cop out to me

But then i'm always skeptical

Sorry to hear about that. Too bad you can't just put a modem and use a dial up account to connect to a Q after hours. Or use PCAnywhere and transfer workunits to/from home.

Goodluck.

Sorry to hear that, Crazee.

Can't we make a deal with the host (Lanman, I thought) to transer these machines to the Enterprise Crack rack?
I'm sure, we can come up with the money somehow to repay Crazee for the components.
That way, the machines will still be cracking for the team, thought under a different name.

And it would be a fine addition to the Enterprise.
