Bad SSD score? :(

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I'm on Windows 7.

I just used AS SSD Benchmarking tool, and I came up with this:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1742159/Pictures/OCZVertex2.jpg

As I understand it, this program heavily favors Intel SSDs, but my read/write speeds seem really bad, and nowhere near what is advertised. I'm not really sure how these things work, but I'm just looking for advice if something is not right.

Thanks.

You want to switch to ahci mode as you're presently using ATA mode.
This will require a registry tweak then changing the setting to ahci in bios.

Okay, I did this as the first step:

And then I restarted into BIOS. I changed two settings related to ACHI. I changed the Marvell Storage Controller to ACHI, and I also changed the "use SATA as: ACHI", and it was previously IDE.

This is the result:

It's a higher score, but did I do everything correctly?

Thanks.

Yup, the ssd is using the microsoft msahci driver and your drive is correctly aligned.
If you've not already done so, check in the properties of the ssd that write caching is enabled.

I have an OCZ Vertex 2 on a Gigabyte motherboard. The Marvell controller is not as good as the Intel controlled SATA ports using Intel RST drivers(don't use the 10.1 drivers, not compatible with OCZ Toolbox, try the 9.6).
The Marvell SATA ports on my mobo are advertised as SATA 6, sadly, they don't even do SATA 3 that well.
Also, make sure the SSD sectors are the right size and the drive is aligned.

Okay, would you be willing to provide information on how to do that?

I have the Asus P7P55D-E Pro mobo. It's not possible for me to use the intel drivers then, right?

If it is, how would I go about changing it safely.

Thanks.

EDIT: Okay, I am now using the 9.6 Intel RST controller. I installed it and rebooted, and it appears to be working. Is there anything I should do in BIOS?

wow these speeds are like you are using SATA1 controller.

Yeah tell me about it.

When I use ATTO, it comes us as roughly 250/275 R/W, so that seems more in line, but it takes larger files to represent those speeds (which I understand to be accurate).

I just want to make sure I'm not missing something. I've heard that AS SSD is much friendlier with intel SSDs.

It's these new OCZ 25nm drives. I have one that scores basically the same as yours (actually slow write speeds.) They're just not very impressive. I'll be replacing mine with the new Intel drives when they come out (as long as they're SATA III) and my crappy OCZ vertex 2 will undergo the bullet resistance test of crappy hardware gone by.

Are you sure?

I have no clue, of course, but it seems to perform well in Atto (which I've been told is the best benchmarking test to use).

OP make sure not to keep important data only on there, keep a back up of what ever is on the SSD. that is important! Mine died in 30 days.

Ooof, well that's not very comforting!

But yeah, I have a 500gb HDD with my unplayed games/music/backup, just in case.

Do these things fail a lot or something?

Because Atto is OCZs benchmark of choice. Everyone who got the new drives saw the decreased write speeds. There was a huge stink about it (check this forum, and OCZ's forums) and OCZ offered to RMA all the drives to replace the internals and bring them up to speed with the old 32nm Vertex 2 drives. I'm personally not willing to go through the hassle. I'll just replace the drive and never buy an OCZ product again.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when shopping for my next SSD.

Also: Is it smart to buy at least 2? For RAID? Is the speed increase considerable?

Intel, Crucial or Corsair. OCZ appears to be acquiring a bad rep for quality lately. Their Vertex 3 appers to be a speed burner, but I'd go for a proven reliable performer.
