Bad Video Card or MOBO?

I just built a computer for my parents a couple of weeks ago and after burning it in for ~24 hours the ti4200 i bought for it started displaying orange stripes...so about 2 weeks later I get a replacement fx5200 (i know it sucks, but its for the 'rents) Again, after about 36 hours i'm seeing a lot of artifacting (this is all during bootup). I can't even boot up into WinXP, not even in Safe Mode (in safe mode it just stops at file agp440.drv).....Does anyone know if i've just had some bad luck and have gotten a couple of defective cards or is my mobo or something else causing these cards to bail out on me? TIA.

did you install the drivers for them? otherwise, it is possible that you may have a defected agp slot on your mobo. its also a possibility that you got defective cards both times.

Yeah, i installed the nvidia drivers for them. The thing is, if it were a driver issue then i wouldn't be getting artifacts during the bios screen.

Sounds like you may have installed the wrong AGP driver for the motherboard. Unfortunately, you will probably have to re-format and re-install windows to clear it up. It has an Intell chipset so make sure you do not accidentaly install Nvidia or Via agp drivers.

my feeling is bad agp slot like someone said, but to be sure, reinstall windows, and FIRST thing, before windows update or any other programs, use the supplied disc with the board to install agp, and other board level drivers. THEN install the drivers for the card itself, if the agp slot is OK, it should work, if it doesnt, you may want to RMA that board

Thanks for the advice. I'm reinstalling windows with a radeon 9000 now. I'll install the board drivers first thing and then the radeon drivers. Hopefully this'll do the job.
