A Japan Airlines jetliner preparing to depart Los Angeles was grounded on Monday after one of the plane's jet engines apparently sucked up a cargo container, officials said.

Television footage showed the large object wedged into an engine as the plane sat on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport.

JAL Flight 61 had been leaving the gate at around 1.30pm (0630 AEST) when the unidentified object blocked one of the engines, according to Los Angeles World Airports, the agency which operates the airport.

The 245 passengers on board were transported back to the airport's Tom Bradley International Terminal. No one was injured.

An investigation was underway.

The container looks pretty much intact, so I'd think the Luggage/Contents would be mostly ok. Seems rather odd such a thing could happen though. Either the dude driving the Luggage train got too close or the Pilot had his engines at a higher than normal rpm. I'd imagine anyways.

Airport officials said the vacuum created by the air intake of the left outboard engine was so strong it pulled the empty container off a baggage cart that was either parked or driven too close to the aircraft.

That means that that container was within 25 feet of the engine. Bad ground handling and/or not watching where they are taxiing.
