On Sept. 22, 1995, 31 geese crossed trails with an E3-B AWACS radar surveillance jet above the runway at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Six were inhaled by the engines, causing flameout, loss of power and a catastrophic fireball crash killing all 24 airmen on board and vaporizing a $180 million aircraft.
