when $400 or even $100 is what some people in those nations make in a year, then yeah if they find it for $10 buck, they'll buy it. if MS wants to win those markets, they are going to have to offer windows there at a lower price.

Either way, people aren't stupid. If nothing is wrong with XP, why would they be in a hurry to drop a few hundred dollars on Vista? Also, anyone on PCs for a length of time has also learned that its a good idea to wait a few months before buying any MS OS.

How does Windows Genuine Advantage make your life a misery... I actually do less to use Windows Update in Vista than in XP (since WU is actually an application now instead of just an internet link ).

I think Vista has some nice security feature upgrades over WinXP. But I dont think people are wowed by that kind of stuff. People in general have been less and less interested in upgrading their computers with the newest OS with each passing iteration since Win95. Win95 had a tangible look and feel upgrade compared to Win3.1 + dos 6.22.

People today simply dont care and will get the new OS, the next time they buy a computer.

vista is catching flak simply because its something new - programs aren't written and optimized for vista like they are for XP. eventually programs will, but that takes time. i also think a slightly longer lifespan could be a good thing for MS, or maybe discrete OSes like 95 and NT were (or to my knowledge they were anyway.. NT for servers, 95 for home comps).

Why am I not buying Vista? 1) I get it for "free" through my college. That's "free" as in, "it's included somewhere in the tuition cost." 2) I don't want Vista. WinXP Pro works just fine - which I also got for "free" through the college.

Windows Vista also helped turn one of the guys in the apartment here into a Mac user.
