They should be forced to make a suspension bridge where none of the towers are in the water going forward to avoid exactly this from happening again.

I think the Japanese and Turkish engineers have suspension bridges that are over 2km (a mile and a quarter long).

I thought harbor masters steer ships until they get to open water?
9 year old ship should have full auto sat nav package meaning they pick the route and the ship navigates itself out. Pilots still in command and lookouts watch for small vessels.

But yes, pilots are responsible for navigating ship out of the harbour. But if they mess up it is still in the captain's head. Weird.

Watched this channel a lot before.

Horrific accident. Not sure what to say to those affected.

Anyone else concerned that, if this is indeed the Dali, that they have a picture from 1999 of what looks like a bridge or crane section on top of it. Is this a regular occurrence with this ship?

I heard somewhere that it was on an outgoing tide. A loss of power and steerage on that with that much mass will go bad really really fast.

I don't understand why they didn't drop the anchors (they have two I think). It may or may not have helped, but it may have.

Never mind, tracking shows it was in lane before loss of power, kind of surprised it can drift sideways that much. Unless there is some maelstrom under water.

Ship went into service in 2015. Unless it is the USS Philadelphia, it couldn't have been in a picture in 1999.

Oh...ok. I was looking at the photo timestamps, as per the site.

I've occasionally driven to Baltimore or driven past it. Just a horrible situation.

Outgoing tide does strange things underwater. Who knows where the rudder was positioned when the power went out. I would have thought they have mechanical overrides for the rudder. All the ships I was ever on had manual overrides for control surfaces.

Each time the lights went out in that video, they lost the ability to change rudder position. If it happened to be in the position for a correction when it started, It would just keep making that turn with the inertia driving it.
Imagine being in your car and you made a little correction at speed, and then the wheel was no longer connected.
It would not take long to get in the ditch that way.

EDIT: Much better detail of the power going out, back on, out.

russian bots are running hard with the conspiracy amplification.
some indian defense analyst spouted off before seeing the full footage with the power outage. the bots jumped on with fake indian accounts to piggyback off of his legit twitter followers to spread the misinfo.

Imagine if it had been 5 or 6 hours later.

One of my first thoughts about this news. As someone who used to live just outside the beltway I know this could have been so, so much worse.

I feel bad for the crew doing pot hole repairs when it happened, poor guys. I'll be surprised if the missing six are found alive too. All that stuff crashing down, the drop, and the water temp, ugh.

Another vote here for Balmer getting their own Big Mac, or better.

Yeah but they were already lined up, so unless there is some serious undercurrent it should not require big adjustments.

They will find a way to blame Biden. Probably criticize his Infrastructure Bill as to why they never updated the bridge.
I called it almost exactly. Republicans are just a bunch of evil fuckers.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) suggested Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act may be to blame.

Other Republicans are blaming the usual suspects, people of color. Because they cause all the problems in America

He's making it easy for them...

I disagree with Biden on this. Federal matching money, sure, but the ENTIRE cost? No fckn way. Make Maryland foot at least 1/2 of the cost of rebuilding the bridge.
