and to top it off Nick Drake

How long has Nick been dead? That might contribute to his lack of recognition.

How about Graham Colton?
Nick wasn't all that well known even when he was alive AFAIK. Not wanting to perform live had something to do with that I'm sure.

I'll add Joe Henry to the list as well. I recently discovered him and have really enjoyed his stuff.

oingo boingo?

I disagree with coheed and cambria, they are getting tons of attention lately. I walked into Sam Goody the other day (I think it was Sam Goody) and they were playing over the loudspeaker. If you can hear them on the radio and in Sam Goody they are getting attention.

They're getting one song played over and over again...that's not the attention that they deserve. I rarely hear them on the radio, about as much as The Mars Volta...and most no one has heard The Second Stage Turbine Blade...so I'm going to have to disagree with you.

There are a lot of bands that fit this criteria in varying degrees. I'd argue Mudhoney, although they've been fairly well known at various points of time. For classic rock, I would say Spirit.

MAD SEASON

it always makes me laugh when people don't know this band. It is only made up of some of the best artists of the day. Too bad one of them is now dead.

Layne Staley - Vocals
Mike McCready - Guitar
Martin Barrett - Drums
"Baker" - Bass

Patio Kings

-these guys are great, kinda like My Morning Jacket

I second the (hed)p.e. nod... These guys have been sweet from the start.
Atreyu
From Autumn To Ashes (huge in a word-of-mouth way, but not commercially)
Dillinger Escape Plan
Cake (yeah they had 3 radio hits, but nobody respects them as the genius band they are... all ppl know is the singles when every one of their albums is insanely great)

and most importantly...
Lovage - was one of the best albums of the year it came out for sure... nobody even heard of the damn thing.

Minus The Bear

Skapel

Album Leaf

Telefon tel aviv

Portishead

Great bands in this list btw.
-Coheed and Cambria
-Sunny Day Real Estate
-Mogwai
-Ryan Adams (you say his newer stuff is downhill, but at least he is experimenting and not following the formula that brought him popularity)
-Mad Season (WOW, I got that cd when it came out, great music)
-Massive Attack

Dillinger, rofl. I listened to them a bit in HS cause a friend of mine was heavy into the hardcore scene.

I've been thinking of getting a FATA album, but I haven't gotten around to it.

The Juliana Theory. Were on Tooth & Nail for a while. They put out an album on Epic .. got screwed over by Epic .. started their own label with a distributor. Looking forward to the next album.

The old stuff was more emo-core .. newer stuff is more rock.

Yes! They were on the soundtrack of half the movies made in the '80s before Elfman started composing full-time, but most people only know a few of their many, many good songs.

Boingo Alive is one of my desert island CDs -- it's a 2-CD collection "best of" where they re-recorded the songs live on a soundstage without an audience, and mixed in the best songs from the first 4 Biongo CDs, Elfman's So-Lo, plus a couple of new songs like "Cinderella Undercover." It's studio-quality sound but with the energy of live performance.

Their Farewell final concert 2 CD set is also excellent, and returns them to the punk energy of their first couple of albums.

I'll throw Jeff Buckley in here while we're at it. He basically did one album and then *bam* dead so a lot of people haven't even heard of him.

I believe that the first time I'd heard about him was when he died. Well after that, I actually heard his music and enjoyed it.

Love is another band I'd throw out, although perhaps they were a little too weird to hit the mainstream, even in '67.

Not a band, but Ryan Adams doesn't get much attention. True, he can be a bit of an a$$ at times, but he's a pretty damn good lyricist and I've seen his albums show up on many "Top 10 of the Year" type lists.. Too bad his music is a bit slow. Maybe if it was more rock infused he'd get more mainstream airplay.
His newer stuff is kinda sucking tho. "Heartbreaker" was brilliant, "Gold" was good, and he just kinda went downhill from there.

I liked his love is hell ep's. Rock & Roll sucks, though. I blame it on the label.
