Bands with the best debut albums?

What bands can you think of that have had fantastic debut albums? Either by critical acclaim and sales, or your own personal tastes.

I know a lot of you don't like them, and I think their 2nd CD is awful... but Bullet for my Valentine had a great first CD.

Boston also had one of the strongest debuts in music history.

Top spot would definitely be Van Halen (self-titled). Running with the Devil, Eruption, You Really Got Me, Ain't Talking 'bout Love, Jamie's Crying, Feel Your Love Tonight, and more.

Honorable mentions for The Counting Crows - August and Everything After, and The Talking Heads - 77.

PRIESTESS! well, they only have the one, but its an awesome CD, and it's going to be hard to top.

Agree about STP... Awesome band.

Also I think Rage Against the machine fits the bill here too.

Not bands whose debut was their best, but just bands with great debut albums, right?

Gotta second Weezer even though I like Pinkerton the best.
Jimmy Eat World, if you consider Static Prevails their debut. Their actual debut was about 3 years out of print at that point. It also wasn't very good.

I wanted to say Green Day but totally forgot about 39 Smooth. That wasn't a great album.

Definitely GnR. I saw someone else said that, so I second. That's in the running for best debut album, period.

it's not "The Counting Crows", it's "Counting Crows" and you should know that from the last track on that record.
